E3 Spark Plugs-Sponsored Takes a Lickin' Modified Tractor Wins NFMS Championship Tractor Pull

The annual National Farm Machinery Show Championship Tractor Pull recently wrapped, and E3 Spark Plugs made an enviable showing. Driven by Steve Bunnage, owner of Steve Bunnage Motorsports, the E3 Spark Plugs-sponsored Takes a Lickin' modified tractor performed like a boss, beating out 14 fierce competitors and taking home the Modified Class Championship. "A great way to start out the 2015 pulling season," Bunnage said after the hard-earned win. The annual tractor pull is the nation's largest indoor pull. Held at Louisville, Kentucky's Freedom Hall, this invitation-only event stars the nation's best drivers and their machines — pro stocks, super stocks, modified, and alcohol tractors as well as two-wheel and four-wheel drive trucks - competing in multiple mud-slinging performances. Debuting in 1969 during the fourth National Farm Machinery Show, the Championship Tractor Pull was the vision of Billy Joe Miles. It began as a one-night, single-class event awarding a grand tota...

Elvis Presley's Secret Chevy Van Uncovered on Velocity's AmeriCarna

Elvis Presley's Secret Chevy Van Uncovered on Velocity's AmeriCarna

Iconic entertainer Elvis Presley will forever be known as the King of Rock & Roll. But legend has it that Mama's Boy also harbored a quite different ambition - to be an undercover agent. Or perhaps, he just longed to go out for a peanut butter banana sandwich in peace, thank you very much. Either way, in order to dodge the public eye that was ever on him, he'd need a plan. Oh, and a ride that was decidedly less conspicuous than his famed pink Cadillac. As it turns out, he had one. And very few people knew it. For a recent episode of his Velocity show, AmeriCarna, three-time NASCAR championship winning crew chief Ray Evernham paid a visit to Graceland, Presley's famed Memphis, TN mansion. The aim was to produce a program segment about the last car Elvis drove before he died, a 1973 Stutz Blackhawk III. But in talking with interviewees, Evernham quickly changed his plans. Graceland insiders offered up another possibility - one that proved too intriguing not to feature on the show...

Ford Punks Would-Be Speed Daters with Sleek 'Stang, Hot Blonde

Ford Punks Would-Be Speed Daters with Sleek 'Stang, Hot Blonde

Have you seen Ford's new "Speed Dating" commercial? It quickly became a favorite here at E3 Spark Plugs. Not only does it feature a sleek, fast car and a gorgeous blonde, it also serves to put a few macho types in their place and elicit a few laughs. Here's the premise: A series of unsuspecting dudes agree to meet a girl at a coffee shop for a blind date, believing they're auditioning for a new dating show. Upon walking through the doorway, they're psyched to see that she's a gorgeous blonde with a sweet personality to boot. And they’re even more impressed when they see what she's driving - a sleek, candy apple red 2015 Mustang GT. After a bit of coffee shop small talk, the faux couples head out for a drive and she coyly fiddles with the stick shift, pretending that she's new to being behind the wheel of such a powerful ride. Right on cue, the guys each offer their expert advice. Because, you know, they're guys and guys know how to handle hot cars and hot women. "Let me driv...

Corvette Museum Marks One-Year Anniversary of Sinkhole with Blue Devil Return, Lemonade Toast

Corvette Museum Marks One-Year Anniversary of Sinkhole with Blue Devil Return, Lemonade Toast

February marks one year since Corvette aficionados worldwide collectively cringed at the news of a massive sinkhole that suddenly and unapologetically formed in the floor of Bowling Green, KY's National Corvette Museum Skydome. Before it was all over, the offending gap measured 30 feet deep and 40 feet wide and swallowed eight rare rides. To commemorate the one-year anniversary of that crazed night, museum officials held a ceremony that featured the official unveiling of one of just three of those eight chewed up cars deemed to be in good enough condition for restoration - the 2009 ZR1 dubbed the "Blue Devil." It's a fitting tribute, as the Blue Devil was the first to be carefully recovered from the sinkhole and successfully cranked up, sending onlookers into a frenzied cheer session. So what's next? "We are currently working with Creative Arts Unlimited of Pinellas Park, FL to develop a meaningful, first-class exhibit to tell the story of our sinkhole," said Katie Frassinell...

Sneak Peek of the Next Bond Cars

Sneak Peek of the Next Bond Cars

It's not set for release until November, but we here at E3 Spark Plugs already are psyched about the next James Bond flick, Spectre. And now, we're giving you a sneak peek of three custom rides to be featured in the film. Reads IMDB.com, "A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE." We have no idea what that terrible truth may be. But thanks to a recent Autoweek.com article, we do know what a few of the next Bond flick rides will be. Of course, there's the iconic Aston Martin DB10. But now, we know there's also a Range Rover Sport SVR, Jaguar C-X75 and Defender Big Foot on the automotive casting roster. The C-X75 makes its on-camera appearance in a car chase scene with 007's Aston Martin DB10. The SVR is the fastest and most powerful the company has ever produced. And the Defender Bi...

Three Top Romantic Car Scenes

Three Top Romantic Car Scenes

Who says gearheads aren't romantic? With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we here at E3 Spark Plugs are feeling all giddy, too. And to prove it, we decided to dig up the most romantic movie car scenes we could find. Here are our top faves: Say Anything (1989): The love scene between endearing underachiever Lloyd Dobbler (John Cusack) and the gorgeous and otherwise-out-of-his-league valedictorian, Diane Courte (Ione Skye) in his 1976 Chevy Malibu proved the iconic automotive hookup scene of the 1980s. Admit it - You've got Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes playing in your head right now. The Virgin Suicides (1999): Set to Heart's hot-blooded Crazy on You, the brief but intense moment of pent up passion shared by high school heartthrob Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett) and the mysterious and lovely Lux (Kirsten Dunst) outside her super-strict parents' upper class Grosse Point home is pretty much every adolescent guy's fantasy. Never mind that the film isn't a John Huges-esque com...

Furious 7 Full Length Trailer Released

Furious 7 Full Length Trailer Released

“This right here takes crazy to a whole ‘nother level,” says Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) in Furious 7, the final installment in the wildly successful, muscle car-crazed film franchise. And judging by the recently released full-length trailer, we here at E3 Spark Plugs agree. Set for theatrical release April 3, Furious 7 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and – playing Ian Shaw, the angry villain obsessively bent on revenge – Jason Statham. It centers on Shaw’s bloodlust for revenge against Dominic Toretto (Diesel) and his crew for the death of his brother, Owen, a former British Special Forces soldier-turned-mercenary killed by Toretto at the end of Fast and Furious 6. Furious 7 also stars the late Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash November 2013 after attending a fundraising event for his Reach Out Worldwide charity. At the time, Walker’s dramatic scenes had been shot, but several action sequences w...

Massive Car Collection Action to Benefit Worthy Cause

Massive Car Collection Action to Benefit Worthy Cause

This 1962 Rolls Royce Mulliner Drophead Coupe is among the more than 230 classics in the Rogers Collection to be auctioned off in Las Vegas. An entire museum full of rare classic cars will go on the auction block later this month, and students throughout the Silver State will benefit. Assembled by the late Jim Rogers, media mogul, former chancellor of the Nevada System of High Education and lover of all things automotive, the collection includes more than 230 rare classic and antique cars that make up the Rogers’ Classic Car Museum in Las Vegas. Rogers’ collection grew over a lifetime as he worked to build something that “represented the American working man’s climb to success,” his widow Beverly Rogers told reporters. “He didn’t just buy the cars – he knew every little detail about their production. He knew how many Oldsmobiles, Buicks and Cadillacs that had been made from the end of World War II through the ’70s, and he could rattle off the particulars of e...

The Hyundai Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept fuses the look of a car with the functionality of a pickup truck. Sometimes, you need a good pickup truck – When your best bud finally decides he’s ready to unload his vintage foosball machine and it’s yours if you can pick it up today; when your wife does a Goodwill purge and wants to get all her so-last-year looks out the door on her way to shop for an updated wardrobe; when you lose a bet and have to help your old roommate move. Got a Vintage Longroof in Your Garage? ACCA Museum Wants to See It

Got a vintage station wagon parked in your garage? The AACA Museum wants to borrow it. Before the minivan took over the roadways like a rabid soccer mom hell-bent on world domination, there was another iconic American automotive workhorse – the beloved station wagon. Now, the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum in Hershey, PA is honoring the memory of your mama’s faux wood-paneled grocery getter with a special exhibition. A Family Affair: Station Wagons opens May 23 and runs through October 12. It’s designed to showcase both familiar and lesser known examples of station wagons and the impact they had on family life. Thus far, the museum has just over a dozen confirmed rides ranging from a 1958 Edsel Villager to a Ford Pinto Rallye, but it needs help filling out the rest of the lineup. If you’re the proud owner of a vintage longroof and willing to loan it to the AACA for five months, call 717-566-7100. Here’s a wish list of the rides that exhibit planners are h...

Fabulous 1950 Futurliner Fetches $4 Million

Fabulous 1950 Futurliner Fetches $4 Million

This 1950 Harley Earl-designed GM Futurliner recently drew $4 million to benefit the Armed Forces Foundation. Back in its day, the GM Futurliner was aptly named. Debuting in 1939 and styled during the 1940s by iconic automotive designer Harley Earl, this then-futuristic, wheeled behemoth proved an integral part of the company’s Parade of Progress traveling exhibition, created to promote innovative vehicles and technologies. Fast forward more than half a century and the Futurliner is still turning heads. One of just nine Harley Earl-designed Futurliners known to exist today (and one of just three still running), a gorgeous 1950 model drew a $4 million gavel drop this past weekend at the 2015 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale event. Measuring an intense 33 feet long, eight feet wide and more than 11 feet tall and topping 12 tons, this red, white and chrome-paneled Art Deco beauty boasts a military-grade 302-cubic inch GMC straight-six gasoline engine and automatic transmission, promi...

Crazy Lucky Guy Survives Being Pinned Between Two Semis

Crazy Lucky Guy Survives Being Pinned Between Two Semis

A shot of the world’s luckiest guy, Kaleb Whitby, still in the wreckage of his pickup truck pinned between two semis. If one could bottle luck, slap a label on it and sell it in stores, we’d line up to buy it if it came from one Kaleb Whitby. This 27-year-old farmer from Kennewick, Washington likely already fancied himself a pretty fortunate guy, on account of having a hot wife, a cute toddler and another on the way. But early Saturday morning, he got a dose of good fortune that stunned rescuers and is making international headlines. “Thank God I’m still alive,” Whitby told reporters on the scene of the massive pileup that involved more than 20 vehicles and some 100 people on the Beaver State’s I-84. “Now, I’ve got to go figure out why.” In the moments before the crash, Whitby had about 100 miles to go on his trip to Council, Idaho, where he was scheduled to pick up two truckloads of cattle at 9am Mountain Time. Along the way, he and fellow drivers contented...

And a new study suggests that by 2035, one in 10 cars sold in the US will be fully driverless. Driver Override Systems: Basically, you get to drive – until you make a boneheaded decision, at which point your car exercises its veto powers. One in 10 Cars Sold will be Driverless by 2035, Study Shows

Several models of partially automated cars hit the market this year, and experts say they’ll go mainstream sooner than you think. The times, they are a changin’! Up until this year, autonomous cars were the stuff of Bond flicks and Google projects. Now, three major automakers – Audi, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors – plan to roll out partially automated cars in 2015 and 2016. Fully driverless cars are expected to hit auto dealership showrooms by 2025. And according to a new study, they’ll be all the rage. Conducted by the Boston Consulting Group, a global management consulting firm and the world’s leading advisor on business strategy, upward of 12 million driverless cars will traverse America’s roadways by 2035. That figure represents 10 percent of annual sales of new vehicles – and we’re talking just 20 years away. Your kids will laugh at your silly, old-school, gotta-drive-it-yourself car like you laughed at that 8-track cassette player your dad just would...

Google’s Phone-Free Android Auto System Set for 2015 debut

Google’s Phone-Free Android Auto System Set for 2015 debut

Google debuts its Android Auto in-car infotainment system this year. On the heels of Apple’s CarPlay infotainment system that debuted in 2014 model year cars, Google recently announced its own version called Android Auto, set for release this year. Apple’s CarPlay is available for all iPhones that operate on iOS7.1 or later and connects via the Lightning connector to a vehicle’s dashboard console. Similarly, the current Android Auto software requires connection to an Android-powered phone to be connected to a car‘s dash console. But Google has bigger plans in store. Ultimately, the company aims to allow for installation of a coming version of the Android software directly into a vehicle’s infotainment system, making it the standard operating interface. Both systems feature voice-activated controls, allowing for safer, hands-free operation. The move essentially will cut out the middleman, allowing drivers to access a range of internet functions including navigation a...
