Senate Committee Votes to Keep Your Ride’s Black Box Data Private

Senate Committee Votes to Keep Your Ride’s Black Box Data Private

A Senate committee just voted to keep your vehicle’s black box data private. Automotive black boxes were designed to help keep America’s drivers safe, and to assist law enforcement in figuring out exactly what happened in car crashes. But critics argued that the information stored on them may be used in questionable ways, violating citizens’ privacy rights. Turns out a Senate committee agrees. Members of the Senate Commerce Committee recently voted to grant bipartisan approval of legislation stipulating that the owner or lessee of a vehicle is the only person entitled to its black-box data. Of course, there are a few exceptions. First proposed by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Hoeven (R-ND) last year, the legislation does allow for law enforcement to access information needed in an investigation of a car crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also can collect data needed for recalls, but personal information that may be stored on your ride’s ...

E3 Spark Plugs Digs Netherlands’ New Glowing Green Highways

E3 Spark Plugs Digs Netherlands’ New Glowing Green Highways

The Netherlands’ new glow-in-the-dark highway markings may do away with streetlights. Not only is it designed to save energy, but we here at E3 Spark Plugs think it’s pretty darn cool, too. The Netherlands’ new “smart highway” features glow-in-the-dark markings in place of street lights. The result – a ride that feels a lot like you’ve been sucked into a futuristic video game. Designed by Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and a Dutch civil engineering firm, Heijmans, the glowing green strips line just a 0.3-mile stretch of the Netherlands’ N329 highway in Oss. But it’s just a first step. If all goes well, highways across the entire country eventually will glow. Here’s the deal – Roosengarde was working to develop an energy-neutral streetlight when he got a different idea. Why not do away with streetlights altogether? After all, they’re expensive to build and can cause serious injury and damage when a car slams into one. New glowing street ...

Yellowed Headlights? Here are Three Ways to Shine ‘em Up

Yellowed Headlights? Here are Three Ways to Shine ‘em Up

Got dull, yellow headlights? We’ve got three easy ways to clear and shine them up. Dull, yellowed headlights can are a bit like those few stray grays in an otherwise beautiful brunette head of hair. They’ll show a car’s true age quickly, and if you’re looking to sell or trade in your ride, they could cost you. E3 Spark Plugs offers four ways to rid your ride of the yellow and shine up those tell-tale headlights. Toothpaste: Turns out toothpaste is a bit of a cure-all. It can take clear away your toddler’s crayon masterpiece from your living room wall, water rings from your coffee table and scuffs from your shoes. And, it can help shine up your yellowed car headlights. Apply a little toothpaste to your headlights with a soft dry cloth and rub it in circular motions. Rinse with water and wipe with a wet cloth. Aluminum Polishing Compound: Wash your headlight with soap and water, then dry them. Apply a little aluminum polishing compound, which you can find at most an...

Five Simple Ways to NOT Sink your Ride’s Resale Value

Five Simple Ways to NOT Sink your Ride’s Resale Value

Drivers are keeping their cars for longer. Make sure you know how to maintain your ride’s resale value. With the economy still a bit tight, today’s drivers are waiting longer to trade in their vehicles. A 2012 survey showed that car owners reported plans to hold onto their cars for an average six years, up from four years in 2011. Now, a new survey shows 78 percent of vehicle owners are planning to wait nearly double that – ten years or more – before selling or trading in their rides. Of course, a whole lot can happen in a decade on the road. And much of it can sink your chances of getting a decent chunk of change for your long-beloved ride. E3 Spark Plugs offers a few tips for maintaining your vehicle’s resale value: Keep it smooth: Avoid denting and scratching your vehicle’s body by watching where you park. Skip spots near the buggy return in the grocery store parking lot. If possible, park in a less-populated spot, but not far enough away that your car become...

Car-Tipping Vandals Hit San Francisco – and Five Harmlessly Hilarious Pranks Involving Cars

Car-Tipping Vandals Hit San Francisco – and Five Harmlessly Hilarious Pranks Involving Cars

Police in San Francisco are investigating a series of smart car tipping. It was a dark and stormy night when eight hooded figures lurking in the shadows moved shiftily toward a lone parked car. Okay, so the storm was added for a dramatics boost. But those eight ne’er-do-well characters definitely were set on some vehicular hijinks. “I thought they looked like they were up to no good,” a witness told a San Francisco television news station about stepping outside to smoke a cigarette and seeing a crew of smart car-tipping vandals hit. “Sure enough they walk up to this smart car right here, all huddle around it and just lift it up and set it on its hind legs.” While authorities are unsure whether it’s the work of serial car tippers or unrelated cases, they confirm three smart cars have been tipped over the weekend in the city, found by their owners sitting up on their rear ends like little Dachshunds begging for treats. Sure, the tiny two-door coupes still are relati...

Come 2018, All New Cars to Have Backup Cameras

Come 2018, All New Cars to Have Backup Cameras

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat already comes with a rearview camera to help make backing up safer. Come 2018, all new cars will have them. It’s a move that we here at E3 Spark Plugs can definitely support. After three years of delays and one passionately fought lawsuit, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially ruled that as of 2018, all new vehicles rolling off automobile manufacturing assembly lines will come standard with a backup camera. It’s not about high-tech gadgetry bragging rights. It’s about saving lives. About six years ago, after multiple incidents of small children being killed by vehicles backing over them, Congress mandated auto safety regulators to pass a federal standard by 2011 to help end such tragedies. Proponents pointed to statistics showing that upwards of 210 fatalities and 15,000 injuries are caused by back-over accidents. Of the victims, 31 percent are children under the age of five and 26 percent are elderly ...

Epic Embarrassment for GM as Massive Recalls Continue Over Decade-Old Ignition Problem

Epic Embarrassment for GM as Massive Recalls Continue Over Decade-Old Ignition Problem

GM CEO Mary Barra testifies on Capitol Hill about her company’s decade-long delay in admitting a potentially deadly ignition issue. Photo by Mark Finkenstaedt for General Motors. We’re guessing you’ve heard a little about this one – the massive recall of GM vehicles over a problem with the ignition that, as it turns out, the company has known about for over a decade. Well, things just got worse, and we here at E3 Spark Plugs want to make sure you know the risk if you’re driving one of the recalled rides. The controversy started in February with a recall of 780,000 GM vehicles, prompted by an ignition switch defect that can cause the engine to shut off unexpectedly and disable the airbags. GM officials attempted to at least partially pass the blame to car owners who load up their key rings and drive on rough terrain at high speeds, saying that those conditions can trigger the problem by moving the ignition switch out of position. That can cause all the electrical comp...

Racing Technology Takes the Football Field

Racing Technology Takes the Football Field

Former racer and longtime motorsports safety advocate is customizing his technology to better protect football players. Many racing enthusiasts also just happen to be football fans, too. That’s the case with us here at E3 Spark Plugs. And it’s certainly the case for Motorsports Hall of Famer Bill Simpson, whose taking his post-racing life’s work from the track to the gridiron. In 1958, an 18 year old Simpson, who would go on to race professionally from 1968 to 1977, broke both arms in a drag racing crash. He later recalled, “Until then, I was like most drivers. The only time I thought about safety was after I’d been hurt. This time, I was hurt bad enough to do a lot of thinking.” That thinking led to Simpson’s first foray into developing motorsports safety solutions. He paid a visit to his uncle’s military surplus store for some advice, rented a sewing machine and got to work on the prototype for a cross-form parachute designed to slow down a drag car. T...

Fancy Scientific Study Proves it – Your Spouse is the Most Annoying Driver You Know

Fancy Scientific Study Proves it – Your Spouse is the Most Annoying Driver You Know

Who who’s the most annoying driver you know? Chances are, it’s your loving spouse, a new poll shows. Well, here’s a “whodathunk?” for the ages. A new study proves that your loving husband or wife is, in fact, the most annoying driver you know. Results of a poll of 2,000 adult licensed drivers by Insure.com spelled out a few info tidbits that, frankly, we here at E3 Spark Plugs didn’t need a fancy scientific survey to know. We bet you didn’t either. But just for formality’s sake, here’s the statistical lowdown… When asked to rat out the most annoying driver they know, respondents answered:  My spouse – 36 percent My friend – 22 percent Mom – 16 percent Dad – 9 percent Other – 8 percent My teen son – 5 percent My teen daughter – 4 percent We have no idea who “other” might be or why they wouldn’t be identified.  Maybe folks were afraid of getting canned if they ID’ed their bosses as the drivers who most drove them batty, or...

Ever Dream of Driving a 1966 Ford Mustang Limousine? Yep – It Exists

Ever Dream of Driving a 1966 Ford Mustang Limousine? Yep – It Exists

Yep – This here is a stock 1966 Ford Mustang-turned-stretch limousine. Well, here’s something you don’t see every day – a 1966 custom four-door Ford Mustang limousine. What? You never knew Ford make such a contraption? Well, the company didn’t. But someone did. Most rides that get turned into limousines are ones with designs that already lend themselves to that stately limo look. Think Lincoln Town Cars, Cadillacs, Mercedes Benzes, etc. Every now and then, someone gets an out-of-the-box creative urge to do something a bit different – Ergo stretch limousine versions of Hummers, Volkswagen Beetles and semi truck cabs. But a sweet classic, otherwise perfectly stock Pony car? Honestly, we here at E3 Spark Plugs aren’t sure what to think of it. And judging by the online comments, neither is most of the classic car buff world. It seems the vocal majority consider it more automotive travesty than creative ingenuity. At least one guy out there loves it. The stretch Pony...

850-HP Buick Drives Off with Detroit Autorama’s 2014 Ridler Award

This custom 1964 Buick Riviera, aptly named the “Rivision,” won the 2014 Ridler Builder Award. The Detroit Autorama’s Ridler Builder Award is one of the most prestigious and coveted honors among the North America’s classic hot-rod enthusiasts. And this year, bragging rights go to J.F. Launier, owner of Osoyoos, British Columbia’s JF Kustoms for his jaw-dropping custom 1964 Buick Riviera. This canary yellow, 850hp stunner is the finished product of 200,000 hours of labor over a period of six years, plus a whopping $300,000 and some change. Per the Ridler Award rules, Launier’s Riviera, aptly renamed the “Rivision,” is a whole new creation from its arguably humbler beginnings, right down to the spark plugs, and the Detroit Autorama was its first public appearance. Over the course of its hotrod transition, it went from a four-seater to a two-seater and gained a 6.2-liter GM-sourced LS-series engine and a set of twin turbos, lending its 850hp capacity. It’s got a...

Fast & Furious 7 to Resume Production this Month – Paul Walker’s Character to be Retired

Late actor Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in Fast Five. Filming of Fast & Furious 7 resumes March 31, four months after Walker’s sudden death. When news hit that actor and racing enthusiast Paul Walker had been killed in a high-speed, single-car crash November 30, production on his last film, Fast & Furious 7, came to a halt. Now, after months of deliberation as to whether to continue the film’s production and, if so, how to most honorably deal with the loss of Walker on screen, fans finally have an answer. The news came this week via a Facebook post by Vin Diesel, lead actor in the Fast & Furious film franchise and a close friend of Walker’s. “The transition into that Dom state of mind has always been an interesting one… only this time there is added purpose, a collective goal to make this the best one in the series,” wrote Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto, an Italian American elite street racer, auto mechanic and ex-convict with a violent background and deep faith....

Did Sweden Just Make the World’s Fastest Supercar?

Did Sweden Just Make the World’s Fastest Supercar?

The Koenigsegg One:1 is being touted as the world’s first megacar, and its fastest production car. Just last month, the Hennessy Venom GT caught our eye here at E3 Spark Plugs and made headlines throughout the automotive media world with its Guinness World Record breaking test run. Going from zero to 186.4 miles per hour in just 13.63 seconds and proving its capability to hit 270.49 mph, the Venom GT quickly became the forerunner for designation as the fastest supercar in the world. But that was before the Geneva Motor Show and the jaw-dropping debut of the Swedish-made Koenigsegg One:1. Not only is it a serious head turner, this hypercar touted as the world’s first “megacar”, may have already knocked the Venom GT into second place for the world’s fastest production car title by virtue of its performance figures. Koenigsegg officials claim the One:1 can hit a top speed of 273mph, thanks in large part to the feature that inspired its name. For every kilogram the car ...
