E3 Spark Plugs Recommends: “Need for Speed,” in Theaters Friday

Aaron Paul shows some impressive behind-the-wheels talent in “Need for Speed,” in theaters March 14. This is one that fast car enthusiasts, film fans and gamers have been waiting for. The video game-inspired feature film Need for Speed, starring Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame and Dominic Cooper, hits movie theaters nationwide this Friday, March 14. The film adaptation of the enduringly popular game series is the story of street racer Tobey Marshall. Fresh from prison, he joins a cross-country race, bent on revenge against the wealthy business associate who framed him. Meanwhile, little does he know that his ex-partner has learned of the plan and placed a massive bounty on Marshall’s head as the race begins. Need for Speed is described as “a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise.” But producers and critics promise this is no formula ...

Did Sweden Just Make the World’s Fastest Supercar?

Did Sweden Just Make the World’s Fastest Supercar?

The Koenigsegg One:1 is being touted as the world’s first megacar, and its fastest production car. Just last month, the Hennessy Venom GT caught our eye here at E3 Spark Plugs and made headlines throughout the automotive media world with its Guinness World Record breaking test run. Going from zero to 186.4 miles per hour in just 13.63 seconds and proving its capability to hit 270.49 mph, the Venom GT quickly became the forerunner for designation as the fastest supercar in the world. But that was before the Geneva Motor Show and the jaw-dropping debut of the Swedish-made Koenigsegg One:1. Not only is it a serious head turner, this hypercar touted as the world’s first “megacar”, may have already knocked the Venom GT into second place for the world’s fastest production car title by virtue of its performance figures. Koenigsegg officials claim the One:1 can hit a top speed of 273mph, thanks in large part to the feature that inspired its name. For every kilogram the car ...

National Corvette Museum Begins Extraction of Vintage ‘Vettes Swallowed by Sinkhole

The 1962 Black Corvette was the third car successfully extracted from the 30-foot-deep sinkhole that opened up the floor of the National Corvette Museum last month, swallowing eight vintage ‘Vettes. In the early morning hours of February 12, an alarm alerted staff of the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY to an unexpected vandal – a 40-foot-wide, 30-foot-deep sinkhole that had formed in the floor of the museum complex’s Skydome. Three weeks later, crews have successfully lifted three of the eight vintage ‘Vettes that the sinkhole swallowed, including the 1962 Black Corvette. Dubbed “Operation Corvette Plus,” the extraction project began last week with with shallow and deep test borings to make sure the full Skydome floor and the surrounding foundation were safe from another potential sinkhole collapse. Meanwhile, workers began drilling, high-strength grouting and installation of steel-cased micro piling connected to the dome’s perimeter to secure and r...

Lotus Aims to Rev Up the Luxury Motorcycle Business

Lotus Aims to Rev Up the Luxury Motorcycle Business

The new Lotus C-01 is the British race car maker’s first entry into the motorcycle business. In June 2012, British sports car and race car manufacturer Lotus Cars fired its CEO and reported a near $200 million loss. Luckily, the company had a recovery plan in mind – and they’ve just unveiled it. Take a gander at the new Lotus C-01, the luxury carmaker’s first entry into the motorcycle business. Dubbed a “hyper-bike,” It’s got a bit of a Hollywood pedigree. It’s the creative brainchild of former Bugatti Automobiles designer Daniel Simon, the guy responsible for the Tron: Legacy light cycles and the bubble ship flown by Tom Cruise in Oblivion. Germany’s Kodewa racing team collaborated on the design of the bike, which is licensed to bear the Lotus name, but actually will be produced by Germany’s Holzer Group. So yeah – it isn’t really a Lotus bike at all, except for the name. No matter, the C-01 is definitely turning heads in the industry and among motorc...

Stolen ’57 Chevy Returned 30 Years and One Fantastic Fix-Up Later

Stolen ’57 Chevy Returned 30 Years and One Fantastic Fix-Up Later

Ian “Skip” Wilson’s prized 1957 Chevy recently resurfaced after disappearing from his yard three decades ago. We here at E3 Spark Plugs are big believers in the notion that sometimes, life’s wrongs get righted in amazing ways. Such is the case for Ian “Skip” Wilson, a 65-year-old retired mechanic who recently got a phone call he never expected. On the line was a California Highway Patrol investigator asking if, per chance, Wilson had documentation of a certain 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. Turns out the junker hot rod that he bought in 1975 and that disappeared form his driveway in 1984 had been found. Wilson paid just $375 for the car, which he bought from his nephew in Pennsylvania. He used it as his daily ride for years and had big plans to fix it up, returning it to showroom condition. Eventually. But before he got around to it, someone made off with the ride. “I assumed somebody chopped it up and was using parts of it at the racetrack,” Wilson recently told r...

It’s all About Communication – Everyday Cars with Futuristic V2V Feature Under Way

V2V-enabled cars will be able to communicate, giving each other a heads up about potential crashes, federal safety officials say. Have you heard of V2V, E3 Spark Plugs fans? If not, you will soon. Officials with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that America’s cars of the future will feature a potentially life-saving technology known as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. V2V allows your car to have a little chat with others on the road, giving that SUV two lanes over a heads up about oncoming danger. Well, kind of. Vehicles won’t actually talk a la K.I.T.T. (a little ’80s nostalgia there), but rather communicate via electronic signals about potential hazards. For instance, let’s say you’re waiting at an intersection when the light turns green. But the bonehead behind the wheel of a flashy little sports car in the perpendicular lane just doesn’t have time for his red light. So, he floors it, intent on making i...

Didn’t Take a Study to Know This: Women Dig Men in Trucks

Didn’t Take a Study to Know This: Women Dig Men in Trucks

Because all women who drive red sports cars look like this. At least according to a recent survey. Joe Diffie belted it to the top of the charts in 1994. And we knew it all along, anyway. But now, a (barely) scientific study has made it official – “There’s just something women like about a pickup man.” In an ever futile attempt to fully understand just how the lady brain works, the white coats over at Insure.com recently conducted a survey of 2,000 men and women, asking what kinds of rides they think the most attractive people drive. Turns out the ladies love trucks – Pickup trucks, mainly, but that big, brown hunka-hunka UPS truck could rev up a gal’s lust engine, too. Here’s the rundown from the rides women dig most to the ones that won’t even get you to first base: Pickup trucks: 32% Sports cars: 27% SUVs: 16% Sedans: 11% Hybrid or electric: 9% UPS truck: 4% Minivans: 2% Mail truck: 1% Of course, there’s a catch. To maximize your spot on the h...

Sinkhole Swallows Eight Cars at National Corvette Museum

Sinkhole Swallows Eight Cars at National Corvette Museum

Yep – Those are vintage ‘Vettes you see in that 30-foot-deep sinkhole in the Skydome floor of the National Corvette Museum. Museums, art galleries, jewelers and the like often outfit their spaces with motion sensors to help alert staff members and protect the high-dollar goods. So, when the sensors went off early Wednesday morning at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, staffers expected they might catch a would-be thief attempting to make off with a sleek new ride. If only. Instead, the scene proved a bit more unnerving than anyone expected. Turns out a massive sinkhole formed beneath the museum’s Skydome section, alerting security at 5:44 am. The Bowling Green Fire Department quickly responded, finding a hole measuring an estimated 40 feet across and up to 30 feet deep. “It is with heavy hearts that we report that eight Corvettes were affected by this incident,” museum officials said on its website. They include: 1993 ZR-1 Spyder on loan fro...

Bogus Chinese-Made Parts Force Worldwide Aston Martin Recall

Bogus Chinese-Made Parts Force Worldwide Aston Martin Recall

The 2013 Aston Martin DB9 is one of the models recalled over faulty Chinese-made accelerator pedal arms. If you drive an Aston Martin, you may want to park it – fast! E3 Spark Plugs has learned that the English luxury sports car manufacturer has issued a recall of nearly 18,000 cars over an issue that could cause the cars’ accelerator pedal to break off. Until now, the accelerator pedal arm had been manufactured by an outside supplier in China. Turns out that parts maker was using a counterfeit plastic material – one that falls far short of the particular material that Aston Martin officials specified – in part of the pedal. If the pedal arm breaks, your car will be unable to accelerate or maintain speed, making for a potentially dangerous situation on the roadways. The recall affects all Aston Martin models except the Vanquish, the Cygnet and a few limited edition specialty cars. Recalled cars are DB9, DBS, V8 Vantage, V12 Vantage, Rapide, Rapide, Rapide S and Virage...

Biker Culture, Motorcycle Mechanics Big Draws at One Motorcycle Show

Vicious Cycle’s Joe Pethoud and his 1974 S-3 Kawasaki will be among the vintage bikes on display at The One Motorcycle Show this weekend. Bikers by the hundreds are headed to Portland, Oregon’s Yale Union for the fifth annual The One Motorcycle Show this weekend. But if you’re expecting a roster of sleek new bikes that just rolled off the manufacturer’s lot, you ain’t gonna get it. Nope. This show is for the DIY vintage motorcycle lover who craves the experience of resurrecting a rusty old ride into a road-ready new best friend. The event’s website says it this way: “The One Motorcycle is all about the idea of the fusion of bike and owner as one connected unit. No matter what segment of motorcycle culture a rider may represent – and how accurate those stereotypes may be – there’s a strong connection between these wild bikes and the people that ride them.” On proud display are the likes of a 1964 Triumph Bonneville; a 1955 IZH M47 350CC Dual Port Single ...

Toyota in the Hot Seat for its – Literally – Hot Seats

Toyota abruptly halted the North American sales of six 2013 and 2014 models, including the 2014 Corolla, over potentially flammable seat materials. Toyota has put the kibosh on North American sales of six popular models with heated seats that fall short of US safety standards, E3 Spark Plugs learned today. Turns out heated seats in certain 2013 and 2014 Camry, Avalon, Sienna and Tacoma vehicles are made with a fabric that doesn’t meet inflammability standards. As of yet there have been no confirmed reports of behind-burning incidents involving any of the affected rides. But US officials aren’t about to take any chances. It’s illegal to sell automobiles that don’t meet established safety standards, so the sales came to an abrupt halt this week. The move will affect upwards of 36,000 cars at dealerships nationwide. That’s about 13 percent of Toyota cars currently at U.S. dealers. Back at the factories, Toyota already is installing new, safety standard-compliant materi...

1988 Volvo Passes Million-Mile Mark

1988 Volvo Passes Million-Mile Mark

Vic Dres recently hit the million-mile mark in his 1988 Volvo – a feat he’s been working toward for 26 years. Sure, Guinness World Record holder Irv Gordon has him beat, passed the three million mile mark in his 1966 Volvo P1800 last year. But the million-mile mark is nothing to sneeze at either. That’s just what Vic Dres experienced recently, when he watched the odometer click over to seven figures. Well, almost. You see, his odometer has only six digits, so all he really saw was zeros. But you’ll just have to imagine that glorious “1″ to the far left. When Dres bought his Volvo GLE in 1988, he was already a man with a million-mile plan. To prove it, he even bought a personalized license plate that read “GL1000K.” And for the next two and a half decades, he kept at that goal, despite the naysayers. “I don’t think they believed me at all,” Dres told reporters with California’s KSBY recently. Oh, but they do now. Of course, Dres’ 160-mile daily commut...

10 Tips for Drivers Clueless About Icy Rides

10 Tips for Drivers Clueless About Icy Rides

Winter storms have hit several Southern states and cities including Birmingham, Alabama (pictured) hard, bringing traffic to a standstill and prompting hundreds to abandon their vehicles on highways. There’s no official confirmation of a zombie apocalypse and we here at E3 Spark Plugs are pretty sure the Biblical rapture hasn’t taken place. But the roadways in Atlanta sure look like a scene out of a post-apocalyptic movie. The wild weather dubbed “Snowmageddon” has hit a few Southern states that typically are not as prone to the white stuff as are our Northern neighbors. Case in point – At the time of our writing this blog entry, Atlanta’s Tuesday afternoon rush hour is now in its 22nd hour. Yep, you read that right. Twenty two hours of an epic gridlock of vehicles on the highway. Hope you brought a good book. In what’s being called historic transportation dysfunction, Atlanta’s roadway infrastructure is failing miserably to withstand the effects of winter sto...
