Holy Roller! Now’s Your Chance to Ride Home on the Pope’s Harley-Davidson

Holy Roller! Now’s Your Chance to Ride Home on the Pope’s Harley-Davidson

Pope Francis’ Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide will be auctioned off for charity next month While it’s doubtful you’ll ever get the chance to ride shotgun with Papa Francesco, you just might get to rev up and hit the open road on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. That is, if you can book it to Paris’ Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées in time for the Bonhams Auction February 6. That’s where the famous European auctioneer will place Pope Francis’ Hog up for bids. Papa Francesco, as he’s affectionately known throughout Europe, is perhaps the coolest guy yet to rock the Papal robes. He does his own bidding, actually picking up the phone calling people himself rather than having a paid assistant handle his communications. He’s been known to switch out his Papal vestment for plain ol’ priest garb and sneak out of the Vatican in the wee hours of the night to visit with, feed and minister to Rome’s homeless. And, he famously chose to forgo pricey Vatican rides, which ...

Houston Auto Show Gets Underway

Houston Auto Show Gets Underway

The new Ford F-150, unveiled this week at the Houston Auto Show, out-hauls every other truck in its class, company officials say. Even as the North American International Auto Show (informally known as the Detroit Auto Show) continues, the second major automotive event of the year has begun, too. The Houston Auto Show revved up on Wednesday and already is proving a top draw among auto industry pros and enthusiasts. All the latest from auto and auto accessories manufacturers fill 70,000 square feet of display space at Houston’s Reliant Center and there are plenty of interactive opportunities. Camp Jeep’s Four-Wheel Drive Adventure is a popular stop, giving riders an off-road experience right there on the show floor. The Ride & Drive exhibit allows visitors to test drive more than 60 models. And the Ram Truck brand Test Track offers an interactive test-track outfitted for the North American Truck of the year, the RAM 1500 pickup truck. There’s a reason for the focus on tr...

Take a Virtual Dirt Bike Ride Through the Historic Packard Plant Ruins

Take a Virtual Dirt Bike Ride Through the Historic Packard Plant Ruins

This guy beat the new security team to the famous Packard plant ruins, giving viewers a few glorious moments of “motocross meets the monument.” After decades of abandonment, Detroit’s East Grand Boulevard Packard plant is almost as famous for its ruinous state as for its history as one of the first automotive factories to establish the city as America’s car making capital. Now, E3 Spark Plugs takes you on a virtual tour of what’s left of the plant via a homemade dirt bike and an aerial drone camera in the video below. Built in 1903, the plant housed Packard’s manufacturing operations for over half a century. During that time, Packard became the dominant luxury car in the US, outselling all other luxury brands combined, including Cadillac. The company also assisted military and war operations, building Liberty engines for military aircraft in the late 1910s and aircraft and marine engines for the US military and World War II allies in the early 1940s at the Detroit ...

Another 1967 Corvette L88 Breaks Auction Record with $3.85 Million Sale

Another 1967 Corvette L88 Breaks Auction Record with $3.85 Million Sale

This rare red-on-red 1967 Chevy Corvette L88 just broke auction sales records fetching a cool $3.85 million. The past few months have been very good ones for the blessed few owners of rare 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88s. In September, a buyer at a Mecum auction drove home a ’67 L88 for a record-breaking $3.2 million. That price tag pummeled the prior record of a now seemingly paltry $1.6 million for a Corvette at auction, set by Barrett-Jackson in 2008 with the Pininfarina-built, one-off “Rondine” coupe. But that $3.2 million record proved to be a short lived one. This past weekend, another ’67 L88 ‘Vette was on the auction block with Barrett-Jackson’s Arizona event. This time, the hammer fell at a new record – a head-spinning $3.85 million. She’s a rare beauty, alright. The Candy Apple Red head-turner is one of just 20 racetrack-worthy rides that were produced and sold that year. Consider that it’s the only known car with the unique red on red color combinati...

E3 Spark Plugs’ Where Are They Now – Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1966 Lincoln Continental

This 1966 Lincoln Continental convertible used by Martin Luther King, Jr. was fully restored and now is on display at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN. Today, America honors the late Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights pioneers who risked their livelihoods and their very lives for peace among all of the nation’s peoples. Dr. King was born Michael King on January 15, 1929. His father, an Atlanta pastor, would change both their names after a 1934 trip to Nazi Germany to attend the Fifth Baptist World Alliance Congress in Berlin, where he was inspired by the work of German reformer and initiator of the Protestant Reformation Martin Luther. Dr. King grew up to become one of the world’s most influential civil rights activists, tirelessly promoting non-violent reform. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In March of 1968, Dr. King and his entourage traveled to Memphis, Tennessee in support of the black sanitary public works employees who had been on strike ...

E3 Spark Plugs’ Favorite Detroit Auto Show Debuts

The 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 is among the top debuts at the Detroit Auto Show. The automotive New Year is truly starting off with a bang at the Detroit Auto Show (formally known as the North American International Auto Show). We here at E3 Spark Plugs are honed in on all the media coverage and a few of the major debuts have really piqued our attention. Here are three of our favorites thus far: 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06: This sleek street race-capable roadster boasts a minimum 625 horsepower and 635 foot-pounds of torque, and was GM’s fastest car ever when engineers tested it at the Milford Proving Grounds. That’s thanks in large part to the aluminum frame and a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with a custom-made 8-speed automatic transmission. The Z06‘s looks are supercharged as well with a deeply vented hood, a large rear spoiler and an aggressive front splitter plus cooling vents in the fender, rear quarter and hind haunches. The new Z06 also will be offered with a removable r...

Toyota’s Hydrogen-Powered Fuel-Cell Car Commands Attention at CES 2014

Toyota’s hydrogen-powered fuel-cell car is turning heads at CES 2014 and will hit the California market next year. The 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas opened with a bit of theatrics. Actor Christopher Lloyd of Back to the Future fame blew into town in the film’s famous time traveling DeLorean. But once the smoke dissipated and Dr. Brown left the stage, it was another futuristic ride that stole the spotlight. Only difference – the Toyota FCV isn’t a far-off fantasy. In fact, the company’s hydrogen-powered fuel-cell vehicle has been 20 years in the making will hit West Coast showrooms as early as next year. Toyota has unveiled several prototypes of fuel-cell vehicles over the past decade. A fuel cell is a device that converts chemical energy from a range of fuels into electricity via a chemical reaction with oxygen or another oxidizing agent. Hydrogen is considered a potential answer to global energy issues because it’s renewable, nonpolluting and easily ...

Self Driving Cars – Not If, but How Soon and How Much, New Study Shows

Self Driving Cars – Not If, but How Soon and How Much, New Study Shows

Lexus’ self-driving car concept was unveiled a year ago. Experts say we can expect SDCs to be the norm within just a few decades. It’s been the stuff of science fiction for decades. But in just a decade, self-driving cars will be on pace toward becoming the norm, according to data from a new study by IHS Automotive, a provider of global market and economic information. Researchers predict that annual sales of autonomous cars will surge from 230,000 in 2025 to upwards of 11.8 million by 2035. The cumulative result – 54 million driverless cars in use around the world, with as many as a third of them right here in the good ol’ USA. In fact, by 2050, nearly all private and commercial vehicles built will be self-driving. While the notion of millions of vehicles on the road with no one at the steering wheel might seem a bit unnerving, experts believe it self-driving cars (SDCs as they’re becoming known) will actually make America’s roadways safer. “As the market shar...

Five Hot New Motorcycles to Ride in 2014

There’s a whole slew of hot new motorcycles to rev up your 2014. Here are five of our favorites here at E3 Spark Plugs, in no particular order: Harley-Davidson Street 750 and 500: Harley-Davidson’s first all-new model in 13 years is powered by an also all-new power system dubbed “Revolution X,” featuring a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin with chain-driven single overhead camshafts that operate four valves per cylinder. It’s credited with keeping the seat high, but the center of gravity low. These bikes are expected to be a hit with the young urban market. BMW 1200RT: Hey, short guys – this one’s for you. The new BMW 1200RT is designed to bring the rider triangle formed by the seat, footpegs and handlebars nearly an inch closer to the ground. The boxy mainframe is stronger an...

Car Insurance Discounts You Might Not Know About

Car Insurance Discounts You Might Not Know About

Work from home? Live on a farm? Got a college degree? All of these can score you a discount on your next car insurance policy. While you probably see or hear advertisements from auto insurance companies every day, you rarely hear the details about how you can get extra discounts. Companies love to draw you in with promises of savings. What they do not tell you is that even more savings may be available to you. All you need to do is ask. Low mileage drivers: If you only have a short commute to work or work from home frequently, you may not put many miles on your vehicle throughout the year. While the mileage numbers and discounts vary by company, drivers with low annual mileage can save about 10% on their insurance. Discounts may also be available if you only drive a couple of days each week. Stick with them and renew early: The longer you stay with one insurance provider, the greater your discount. If you have been with your provider for more than three years, it’s worth ...

Hustle Cars – How those Groovy ’70s Rides were Cast

Hustle Cars – How those Groovy ’70s Rides were Cast

“American Hustle” boasts not only a cast of Hollywood heavy-hitters and a crazy true-life story base, but a plethora of groovy vintage rides, too. The American Film Institute named American Hustle the year’s best film, and it’s either already won or is nominated for a slew of film festival and critics awards including seven 2014 Golden Globes nods. judging by the box office figures, moviegoers agree. It boasts a serious Hollywood hotshot cast and a captivating storyline, no doubt. But the real scene stealers are those uber-glam 70s styles (man perms notwithstanding) and those oh, so groovy rides. The film follows con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and his seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) as they’re forced to work for crazed FBI agent Richie DiMasio (Bradley Cooper) amid a world of Jersey powerbrokers and Mafiosi. Jeremy Renner plays Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey politico caught between the con-artists and Feds. And re...

Six New Year’s Resolution for Car Owners

Six New Year’s Resolution for Car Owners

You probably make a few New Year’s resolutions for yourself every year. Many people look for ways to improve their health and general lifestyle. If you own a car, there are some resolutions you can make to keep your vehicle in good condition and avoid breakdowns. Change the Oil: One of the best ways to ensure your vehicle’s engine lasts is to change the oil on a regular schedule. You can do this project yourself or take your car in for service. You may find that a professional oil change does not cost much more than doing it yourself. There will not be any used oil to dispose of either. Check Your Tires: It really does not take time to take a walk around your car and look at the tires. Check the wear pattern and amount of remaining tread. If you notice unusual wear, take your vehicle in for an alignment check. Look for signs of dry rot and check the tire pressure. You do not want to spend your time changing a flat. Properly inflated tires will improve your gas mileage. Los...

Five Automotive Trends to Watch in 2014

Five Automotive Trends to Watch in 2014

The new Mazda 6 could be the one to usher in the era of diesel cars, some automotive pundits predict. Just as dozens of “Top 10″ lists, naming highlights of 2013, are coming out it’s also time to look forward to the new year with a look at trends that will take over and shape the automotive industry in the coming year. Here are some of the top trends for 2014: Hybrids Take Over: Chances are you know at least a dozen people who are driving hybrids and that number is predicted to rise steadily as they become the norm. As hybrid manufacturers add new models to their lineup there will be more options for people who currently can’t find one which they like. Prius alone already boasts four different models. And as people trade in their old hybrids, the second-hand market will have more choices for those who don’t want to buy new. Better Budget Cars: As American car makers jump in to relatively new territory, the options on these cars–highly targeted at the youth marke...

Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo to Hit the Real-World Streets

Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo to Hit the Real-World Streets

That sleek, sexy and super fast Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo in the wildly popular game may hit the real-world streets soon. It’s pretty safe to say that you’ll never see most of the sleek, stunning supercars created exclusively for the Gran Turismo video game franchise pull up next to you at a red light. But there may be one exception coming soon. Florida-based J&S World Wide Holdings head Jeff Halverson was so enamored with the Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo’s static show car displayed at the recent LA Auto Show that he decided to create a street-legal version. Halverson reportedly will use the 2014 SLS AMG GT as the car’s base, but re-body it into carbon fiber to resemble the crazy beautiful game version. It’ll boast the same 6.3-liter V8 with 583 horsepower driving the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. But with the carbon fiber shaving 200 pounds off the curb weight, the street version could prove capable of speeds even faster than tha...

Four New Rides We’re Anxious to See in 2014

Four New Rides We’re Anxious to See in 2014

2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid The New Year always means new rides. And we here at E3 Spark Plugs are anxiously awaiting the arrival of several in 2014. Here are our top three picks: 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid: Inspired by the vintage 917 racers with a black-and-white livery scheme, the new Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid can go 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and is capable of speeds of over 211 mph. And, it can go about 18 miles on a charge before switching over to the gasoline engine. It’s pricey, though. A limited-edition model will set you back a cool $970,000. Look for it in early 2014. 2014 Tesla Model X: This one is perhaps the most anticipated debut of the year. Touted as a cross between a stylish SUV and a practical-yet-uber-cool minivan, the specs include a futuristic touchscreen dashboard, luxury interior and, of course, those flashy falcon wing doors. This ain’t your typical soccer mom-mobile. It can hit 60 mph in under five seconds and is expected to run about $70,000. ...

GM Makes History Today – Names Mary Barra First Female CEO in Global Automotive Industry

GM Makes History Today – Names Mary Barra First Female CEO in Global Automotive Industry

GM’s Mary Barra, the world’s first female CEO of a major automaker. General Motors Co. (GM) CEO Dan Ackerson today officially announced that he’s retiring in January. And his successor just made global automotive industry history. GM confirmed rumors circulating throughout Detroit that longtime company executive Mary Barra would take the helm, becoming the world’s first female CEO of an automaker. Barra, 51, joined GM as a factory floor intern 33 years ago, steadily climbing the corporate ranks over the next three decades. Her first official job with the company was as a plant engineer in the Pontiac Motor Division, where her father had worked for 39 years as a dye maker. She immediately stood out in the profession where there were few women and even fewer 18-year-olds. “It was a rougher environment,” she said in an interview with reporters earlier this year. “It makes you harder.” Young Barra got even tougher when GM placed her in a program for high-potent...

Some 20,000 fans turned out for an impromptu tribute rally for late actor and racer Paul Walker. Hollywood and the racing community remain in a state of shock over the sudden loss of actor and accomplished racer Paul Walker, who was killed, along with his friend and business partner Roger Rodas, in a November 30 single car crass in Los Angeles. To honor the late star best known for The Fast and the Furious film franchise, some 20,000 fans turned out at an impromptu rally in the LA suburb near the crash site. Promoted via Facebook and Twitter, the rally attracted thousands of drivers in souped up cars including modified Porches, Corvettes and Camrys – all in a nod to Walker’s love for all things automotive. The actor was an avid car enthusiast who competed in the Redline Time Attack racing series. He raced an M3 E92 for the AE Performance team and reportedly was preparing for an auto show in the months before his death. “Race in Paradise Paul Walker,” read a tribute si...
