Lamborghini Rocks “Midlife Crisis” with Egoista Concept

Lamborghini Rocks “Midlife Crisis” with Egoista Concept

The Lamborghini Egoista concept, debuted at the company’s private 50th birthday celebration in Italy, is creating quite a stir. In what’s being touted as an epic midlife crisis, iconic automaker Lamborghini unveiled a one-off design that beats any superhero ride you ever sketched in bout of boredom during your high school civics class. Officials debuted the aptly named “Egoista” (which translates to “selfish”) at its 50th birthday celebration in Italy – and immediately revved up a global controversy. Drawing love-it-or-hate-it coverage, the Egoista was designed by the famed Walter De Silva and inspired by the look of Apache helicopters. It’s powered by a 600-hp V-10 and seats just one passionate and unapologetic driver. Says DeSilva: “I wanted to pay homage to and think up a vehicle to underline the fact that Lamborghinis have always been made with passion, and with the heart more than the head… This is a car made for one person only, to allow them to have...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Tim Spurlock

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Tim Spurlock

Tim Spurlock’s 1978 Ford F150 is the fastest mud bogging machine in the New Paris, Indiana area. Tim Spurlock started wrenching with his dad as a kid and was just a teenager when he began building engines as a part-time, after-school business. Twelve years ago, he opened his own paint and body shop which since has grown to two locations with 15 employees. Clearly, his blood is tinged with motor oil. And maybe a little mud. Now, he’s riding high – and fast – as one of his area’s top mud bogging champions. The latest Team E3 Racing Tier 2 winner has a penchant for rebuilding and restoring classic Ford trucks, particularly those from 1953-1979. So when he decided three years ago to build a full mud racing truck, he chose a 1978 Ford F150 that he highly modified for competition. That choice proved a good one. “In the last two years I have been undefeated in two classes for our local series, won a class at every race I have entered in the surrounding three states – a...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner John Hummel

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner John Hummel

Team E3 Racing Tier 2 winner John Hummel. Many a graduating high school senior saves his part-time job paychecks and hits up Mom and Dad for help buying a car. Such was the case for John Hummel of Conesus, NY. But he wasn’t looking for a sleek street car that would impress the girls. Instead, he wanted a lean, mean racing machine. And that’s what he got. The newest Team E3 Racing Tier 2 winner remembers fondly the 1974 Plymouth Duster he bought just after graduating from New York’s Livonia Central School with honors in 1984. It took him and is father two years to ready the car for Hummel’s first race at Williamson, NY’s Spencer Speedway. Hummel finished his debut race in second place and finished the racing season with two major bragging rights – qualifying for the 1987 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) North East Division Bracket World Finals and being nominated for Rookie of the Year at Motorcity Raceway (now New York International Raceway Park), finishing eigh...

Stolen Pulp Fiction Car Found

Stolen Pulp Fiction Car Found

Quentin Tarantino’s stolen “Pulp Fiction” car found after nearly 20 years. It’s a favorite among great movie cars with us here at E3 Spark Plugs - the 1964 Chevy Malibu SS driven by John Travolta’s character, Vincent Vega, in the 1994 cinematic blood fest Pulp Fiction. While the image that immediately comes to mind is of Travolta and costar Uma Thurman in the front seat of the cherry red, city lights shining behind them, the classic convertible is most famous what happened to it after the film wrapped. Nearly 20 years ago, the neo-noir crime director’s beloved ride was jacked from a Los Angeles street. Whether the theft happened on the street fronting Tarantino’s home or his then-girlfriend Mira Sorvino’s apartment is up for debate. But who cares, really? Fact is, the car disappeared without a trace and stayed gone for two decades. That is, until San Francisco Bay area cop, Sheriff’s Sgt. Albert Anolin, began an investigation into an old Malibu in the desert ...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Don Demeny

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Don Demeny

Team E3 Racing winner Don Demeny competes in the Traxxas Torc Off-Road Championship Series. The tiny town of Abrams, Wisconsin is home to just 1,750 residents. But the “titletown” of sorts also boasts several champion off-road racers including Johnny and CJ Greaves, and the newest Team E3 Racing Tier 1 winner Don Demeny.  A racer for 28 years, Demeny aims to add his own name to roster of champions hailing from the small paper mill town. Demeny first got hooked on racing as a teenager, watching the engine-revving, dirt-slinging action from the stands of the Crandon International Off-Road Raceway in nearby Crandon, WI. By 16, he was competing himself. Ever since, “Off-road has been our life,” says Demeny of his team, which includes his father, Gene, as crew chief, and his beautiful wife, Amy. Over the years, Demeny has racked up many race wins including a 2002 Crandon series championship title. He currently races a 2013 Dodge Ram in the Traxxas Torc Off-Road Championsh...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner James Steffenhagen, Jr.

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner James Steffenhagen, Jr.

Team E3 Racing winner James Steffenhagen doesn’t believe in luck when it comes to ruling the racetrack – but a little superstition doesn’t hurt. It all started with a mystery Christmas gift. Then 15 years old, James Steffenhagen, Jr. was a bit perplexed when he unwrapped a small package that contained a toggle switch.  But when he realized that the switch was for a car’s ignition system, it all made sense. “It confused me at first,” said Steffenhagen, the newest Team E3 Racing Tier 1 winner. “But then Dad explained that it was my turn to get into the car and see what I could do.” Steffenhagen had been enamored with the racing world since he was 10 years old. His Uncle Ed Steffenhagen ran NASCAR modifieds at tracks throughout New York and Pennsylvania and his father worked crew. Eventually, both of James’ parents would race as well, his father driving a street stock numbered 31. So, it’s no wonder that the youngest Steffenhagen would anxiously await his tu...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Tyler Shepard – The “Wheelie Wizzard”

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Tyler Shepard – The “Wheelie Wizzard”

= Tyler Shepard, the Wheelie Wizzard, is the newest Team E3 Racing winner. Most days, Tyler Shepard suits up and plies his relatively tame trade as a medical industry sales rep. But upwards of 20 weekends a year, the latest Team E3 Racing Tier 2 winner dons a much flashier getup than his workday jacket and tie, wowing crowds as the “Wheelie Wizzard.” Shepard was just 14 when he first saw “Wheelie King” Doug Domokos perform at a flattrack race in Celina, Ohio in 1995. The young rider immediately began developing his own daredevil style and within a few years, made his own debut before a crowd. For 13 years now, he’s been performing a family-friendly motorcycle entertainment program showcasing his famous wheelies at major events nationwide. Just about any rider with a little experience can rev the engine, pop the clutch and grab a wheelie. But riding on that back wheel for any real distance is tricky. “You have to keep the rear brake on the entire time, then adjust ...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Danny Phillips

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Danny Phillips

Team E3 Racing winner Danny Phillips helped boost lawn mower racing at his hometown’s annual Coalton Days homecoming celebration. Coalton, West Virginian Danny Phillips has been racing lawn mowers for 15 years and has a mantle full of more than 50 first place trophies to show for it. But those trophies are far less important to Phillips than the message his custom-built racing mowers bear. That’s why Phillips is the newest Team E3 Racing Tier 2 winner. “I have dedicated my 2013 team as a tribute to firefighters, first responders and 9/11,” says Philips, noting that one of his mowers has the names of all 343 first responders who lost their lives in the series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. area on September 11, 2001.” “No matter where you may travel across the country, you can count on firemen and first responders to be there in times of emergency...

“Rush” Trailer Released – Story of One of Racing’s Greatest Rivalries to Hit Big Screen in September

= Actors Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl underwent intense driving training to prepare for their roles as two of Formula 1 racing’s greatest rivals in the new Ron Howard film, “Rush.” Photo by Jaap Buitendijk © 2013 Universal Pictures Back in August, E3 Spark Plugs shared a behind-the-scenes video of the making of Rush, a Ron Howard-helmed feature film that tells the story of the rivalry between Formula 1 greats James Hunt and Niki Lauda. With the recent release of the film’s theatrical trailer, we’re more excited than ever for the September premier. Rush stars Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the handsome and flamboyant playboy Hunt, and Inglorious Basterds star Daniel Brühl as his methodical, brilliant opponent Lauda. As the trailer shows, the two were, at times, the closest of friends and the fiercest of competitors. They spent much of their motorsports careers in heated on-track battles in some of racing’s biggest races during the sexy, speed-crazed golde...

Study Shows Children 12 Percent More Distracting Than Cell Phones

Study Shows Children 12 Percent More Distracting Than Cell Phones

Your kids’ back seat dramatics are far more distracting than your cell phone, researchers say. Those crazy kids! One might think that drivers fiddling with their cell phones would be the most distracting thing ever – what with the dialing, the texting, the checking of emails, the downloading of the latest Angry Birds smartphone app and all that. But in a recently released report, Australian researchers instead point the finger of blame at your… precious angels. That’s right. Study results say kids are an even greater distraction to drivers than are cell phones – 12 percent more distracting, to be exact. Turns out, as many a minivan maven probably already knows, those backseat fits of giggles/rage/gotta-go-potties are a major distracted-driving force. And as many a police officer/paramedic/personal injury attorney knows, distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents, far outpacing drunken driving. In fact, a full 80 percent of traffic accidents nationwide are d...

To save his brother’s life, he and his crew are tasked with stealing 50 cars in one night. Among them is the gorgeous Eleanor – a sleek, silver 1967 Mustang GT500. But were it not for budget constraints, she might have been a much different lady. Team E3 Racing winner Daryl Barrett with “Wilma.” In the summer of 1976, Daryl Barrett took in his very first race at Canandaigua Speedway in New York, which happens to be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. That night proved quite eventful, but not for what happened on the track. Shortly after the evening’s program began, the grandstands collapsed and the track subsequently closed for the better part of two years. Anyone less enamored with the racing world might well have considered the drama a bad omen. But Barrett was hooked. Over the years since, he’s become a respected team owner, accomplished crew member and chief and a talented racer. And now, he’s a second-year Team E3 Racing winner. Wilma sports the E3 Spark Plugs logo at all races, car shows and other promotional events.
