Can You Imagine August Without Car AC? E3 Spark Plugs Shares a History Lesson

Can You Imagine August Without Car AC? E3 Spark Plugs Shares a History Lesson

Can you imagine August without your auto air conditioning? Though it’s beginnings trace back to 1884 it didn’t fully catch on until nearly a century later. The earliest motor vehicles may have revolutionized family and individual travel, but comfort was not exactly a priority. No windows meant cool rides in the summertime if your vehicle was capable of the 15mph top speed, but you’d better bundle up in the wintertime. Then, when automakers started closing up cabs, things got really heated. But as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. And as car ownership increased, so too did the need to keep one’s cool behind the wheel. Initial attempts at keeping closed-cab vehicles cool involved placing vents in car floorboards. But this just sucked more dirt and dust than cool air into the car. So, carmakers took a cue from one William Whiteley. Back in 1884, Whiteley had experimented with cooling horse carriages by placing blocks of ice in a holder beneath the carriages ...

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Brody Goble

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Brody Goble

Team E3 Racing winner Brady Goble conquered competitive karting and this year is changing gears, switching to full-time drifting. First, he conquered karting, revving up his competitive go-kart racing career in 2005, traveling the country and hard-driving his way up the North America ranks to the Stars of Karting National Series by the end of the 2007 season. Now, our latest Team E3 Racing winner Brady Goble has his sights set on taking over the pro drifting scene. “Unlike some drifters, I come from a grip background,” says Goble, Canadian-born and currently based in Blaine, Washington. “I fell in love with drifting and originally began sliding cars/go-karts to learn better car control for traditional grip racing.” In 2008, upon wining a scholarship test with BMW North America, Goble found himself in a brand new Formula BMW open wheel car. At about the same time, he bought a Nissan s13 240sx. “We did some events just for fun and I found myself feeling very natural ...

Ron Howard’s “Rush” Chronicles Fiery Formula One Rivalry between Lauda, Hunt

Ron Howard’s new movie, “Rush” follows the friendship and rivalry between Formula 1 racers Niki Lauda and James Hunt. This month marks 36 years since the legendary 1976 German Grand Prix that nearly took the life of Formula 1 great Niki Lauda. And filmmaker Ron Howard is in post production on Rush, a feature film that recreates that fateful day and chronicles the storied rivalry between Lauda and fellow racer James Hunt. Set against the sexy, speed-crazed golden age of Formula 1 in the 1970s, the $65 million biopic details the “great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt, and his methodical, brilliant opponent Niki Lauda,” reads IMDB.com. “The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track, their loves and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error: if you make a mistake, you die.” Chris Hemsworth, who most rec...

E3 Spark Plugs Digs Crazy, Pushup Performing Olympics Bus

E3 Spark Plugs Digs Crazy, Pushup Performing Olympics Bus

Sculptor David Cerny attached a set of giant robotic arms to a 1957 double decker bus to celebrate the London Olympics. Like the rest of the world, we here at E3 Spark Plugs had a blast watching coverage of the London Olympics and cheering for the athletes representing the U.S.A. But we have to admit, we still keep going back to pics of one crazy Olympic promotional ride – Czech artist David Cerny’s pushup performing double-decker bus dubbed “London Booster.” For many, the image of a bright red double-decker is as synonymous with thoughts of London as the sight of Big Ben, Buckingham Palace or the London Bridge. But we’ve never seen a bus like this one. To celebrate the 2012 Olympics, going on in London through August 12, Cerny attached a set of giant, bright red robotic arms to a full-size, 1957 double-decker bus. The bus is outfitted with an engine-powered hydraulics system that allows the London Booster to actually perform pushups, lifting the bus’ front end 45 ...

Three Persistent Tire Myths Deflated

Three Persistent Tire Myths Deflated

Trust your TPMS? Convinced your tire’s gonna explode? E3 Spark Plugs deflates a few tire myths. Tires just might be the most important safety and handling feature on your vehicle. But they’re also the subject of a few persistent myths that can reduce their effectiveness. E3 Spark Plugs shares the top three tire myths and the real-info that debunks them: Myth: “I don’t have to worry about checking my tire pressure because my tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) does it for me.” Real Deal: Actually, TPMSs are kind of like your slacker roommate who doesn’t get around to telling you the microwave oven’s busted until after you open your frozen lasagna dinner box. They’re not required to issue that warning ping until your tire pressure is 25 percent below the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. By then, you’re already well below the pressure required for safe driving. A TPMS isn’t designed as a friendly reminder – it’s a last-minute warning before immi...

Ever since then, I’ve been hooked.” Today, he’s owning the competitive flat track racing scene and, as part of the Project K Racing team, has been instrumental in developing KTM’s flat track machines. The franchise’s original game, The Need for Speed, hit gaming store shelves in 1994, giving gamers a glimpse of life behind the street racing wheel. EA teamed up with Road & Track magazine to create amazingly realistic  features based on precise vehicle data. E3 Spark Plugs Recommends: “Wagonmasters”

Studebaker Lark Wagoneer Back in the day, you probably sunk down below window level, praying that your super cool friends wouldn’t see your mom was dropping you off at school / the ballpark / the skating rink / the mall in the family station wagon. Lame! But fast forward a decade or two and the power of nostalgia kicks in, transforming the station wagon of your childhood from a thing of shame to a thing of beauty.   Okay, so maybe “beauty” is a stretch for some models. But over the decades, station wagon enthusiasts continue to sing the praises of this uniquely American vehicle that started out not as a family ride, but a track-bound workhorse. And now, there’s a documentary to help spread the love. Produced by students of the Documentary Film Program at Wake Forest University, Wagonmasters tells the story of the iconic station wagon as it represents a changing America over the last one hundred years. “The car that was once the quintessential image of the American...

Coolest Concept Travel Trailers We’d Like to See on the Road

Coolest Concept Travel Trailers We’d Like to See on the Road

Robert Williams ForFreedom Caravan Concept Travel Trailer Summertime means road trip time. And for many, those cross-country road trips aren’t spent in a series of hotel rooms. They’re spent in RVs and travel trailers – wheeled homes-away-from-home. Just like car makers, manufacturers of RVs and travel trailers release concept designs of units that may or may not ever make it to market. In any case, they’re always fun to see. E3 Spark Plugs scoured the Internet and found a few of those concepts we’d love to take on the road. 252 Degree Radius Travel Trailer: This one is just what the name says. The somewhat triangular shaped trailer opens up to a 252-degree radius, revealing double-walled, open-air rooms in bright colors. Only trouble is, we’re not sure where/if you can sleep in it. One sketch shows what appears to be a retractable tent-like covering that stretches from one wall to another. But we’re guessing you might want to bring along an old-fashioned campi...

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Jacob “Camokid” Putman

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Jacob “Camokid” Putman

Jacob "Camokid" Putman is Team E3 Racing's youngest winner. Team E3 Racing’s littlest winner yet clearly has a big future ahead of him in professional racing. Jacob “Camokid” Putman of Centreville, VA is a two-year veteran in kid kart racing – and he’s only six. Putman first hit the competitive tracks running the Kid Kart race at Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, Virginia at the tender age of four. His performance in that very first race proved a told-ya-so moment for Putman, putting to rest any skepticism about the boy’s commitment to and talent for racing. Track officials were so impressed that they encouraged Putman’s parents to immediately move him up to Kid Kart 2, affording their son the opportunity for a tougher challenge and better learning experience. The move meant that Putman would be racing against boys who all had at least two years of experience on him. And boy, were those older competitors shocked when Putman landed a second-place class finish for...

The first full size, fully operational Batmobile debuted with the Batman television series in 1966. Though the show remained in production just two years, that groovy dome-topped, red-trimmed and finned ride based on the Ford Futura remains a favorite among ardent fans of the Batman franchise near...

Seinfeld Shows Off Classics in “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”

Comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Michael Richards yuk it up on the new web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." The man famous for his 1990s show about nothing is back with a web-based show about a very specific something. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is pretty much what the new Crackle.com program’s title sounds like. With each weekly episode, Jerry Seinfeld of Seinfeld fame and a fellow comedian drive around town in one of Seinfeld’s classic cars and yuk it up while on their way to a different NY coffee house. It’s a little known fact outside of classic car collecting circles that Seinfeld owns one of the world’s largest Porsche collections, including a Can-Am Spyder racing car he snagged for $4.4 million at a Florida auction. Each week a different vintage vehicle from his garage will make appearance on the show. A one-minute promotional video released last week shows Seinfeld driving a classic Porsche, Triumph, Dodge Charger and Volkswagen Beetle with the like...

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Daniel Alvarez

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Daniel Alvarez

Team E3 Racing Winner Daniel "The Hammer" Alvarez At 19 years old, Daniel Alvarez is undoubtedly ahead of the game. Known as “The Hammer,” he’s already landed an AAS degree in Automotive Technology from Piedmont Technical College and finished a year of veteran racer Tony Blanchard’s Race 101 program, where he studied on a full scholarship – despite having raced competitively for seven years. Many young racers with a seven years of on-track experience might think they’ve already got it all figured out. Not so, says Alvarez. He’s one of the few up-and-comers who understand that building a professional racing career depends as much on what happens off the track as on the track. A racer can be a top-notch talent, but without a solid business and marketing effort fueling your success, your career can stall out fast. Alvarez credits Race 101 with helping him develop a well-rounded approach to professional racing. “Race 101 has completely changed my life in the last...

’66 Volvo to Hit 3 Million Miles in 2013

’66 Volvo to Hit 3 Million Miles in 2013

Irving Gordon's 1966 Volvo is expected to hit 3 million miles in 2013. Photo by Associated Press. In April, E3 Spark Plugs brought you the story of Rachel Veitch and her “chariot,” a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente that had just hit 576,000 miles. With all due respect to Ms. Veitch, we’ve just come across another vintage wonder whose mileage makes her chariot’s look like chump change. Irving Gordon’s 1966 Volvo P1800S has held the Guinness World Records mark for high mileage vehicle since 2002. A decade later, it’s still going strong with just 34,000 miles to go before hitting 3 million miles – something Gordon expects will happen next year. Gordon, a retired school teacher from Long Island, has driven his little red two-door sportster everywhere since he bought it in June of 1966 for $4,150 – his full year’s salary. His mileage thus far is equivalent to crossing the globe upwards of 1,176 times. Much of the later mileage comes by way of traveling to auto shows ...

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Brandon Williams

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Brandon Williams

Team E3 Racing Winner Brandon Williams races dirt track and runs DirtXtra, an online magazine. Dirt track racer Brandon Williams experienced a notable rookie year, landing 11th in the Kankakee County Speedway points for the 2010 season and 23rd in the I-MOD Association series that same year. So, fans were a little surprised to see him take the full 2011 season off. Turns out he had good reason: The birth of his gorgeous young son. But with the 2012 season underway, Williams is gunning for big wins in the dirt late model division, aiming specifically for a UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) National Championship. And E3 Spark Plugs aims to help him accomplish that goal with a Team E3 Racing membership. By weekday, Williams of Kouts, Indiana is a crane operator for U.S. Steel. But come the weekend, he’s tearing up the dirt tracks, along with brother Andy Williams, an operator at Chicago’s Ford Assembly Plant who has been racing competitively since 2006. Hot Wheelers Set New World Record

Hot Wheelers Set New World Record

XGames champs Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy made history this weekend by successfully completing the Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare. Did you catch it this weekend? XGames champs Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy set new world records by successfully completing a 60-foot-tall Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare this weekend at the XGames Los Angeles. The LA cityscape changed a bit this weekend with a real-life replica of the famous bright orange bendy tracks that have lined the play rooms of every American boy since 1968. The double loop structure stood the height of a six-story building and was designed and constructed with the help of physicists who carefully calculated the optimum speed needed for Foust and Tanner’s cars to complete the look without losing to gravity and ending up in a top-down heap of metal at the bottom of the loop. The feat required a precisely timed 60mph acceleration and hit the drivers with 7Gs of force while in the loop. Of course, XGames organizers couldn’t have p...
