Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Brandon Williams

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Brandon Williams

Team E3 Racing Winner Brandon Williams races dirt track and runs DirtXtra, an online magazine. Dirt track racer Brandon Williams experienced a notable rookie year, landing 11th in the Kankakee County Speedway points for the 2010 season and 23rd in the I-MOD Association series that same year. So, fans were a little surprised to see him take the full 2011 season off. Turns out he had good reason: The birth of his gorgeous young son. But with the 2012 season underway, Williams is gunning for big wins in the dirt late model division, aiming specifically for a UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) National Championship. And E3 Spark Plugs aims to help him accomplish that goal with a Team E3 Racing membership. By weekday, Williams of Kouts, Indiana is a crane operator for U.S. Steel. But come the weekend, he’s tearing up the dirt tracks, along with brother Andy Williams, an operator at Chicago’s Ford Assembly Plant who has been racing competitively since 2006. Brandon Williams also...

E3 Spark Plugs Mourns the Loss of Legendary Designer Sergio Pininfarina

Sergio Pininfarnia, 1926-2012 E3 Spark Plugs sends condolences to the family of Sergio Pininfarina, honorary chairman of the Pininfarina Group, who passed away last night at his home in Turin, Italy. As chairman of the company until 2006, Sergio Pininfarina personally developed automotive designs for top companies including Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Volvo, Ferrari and Maserati. His designs ranged from the edgy to the elegantly simple and include the 2002 Ferrari Enzo, the 1984 Ferrari Testarossa, the 1986 Fiat 124 Spider, the 1996 Peugeot 406 Coupe and the 2003 Maserati Quattroporte. Hot Wheelers Set New World Record

Hot Wheelers Set New World Record

XGames champs Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy made history this weekend by successfully completing the Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare. Did you catch it this weekend? XGames champs Tanner Foust and Greg Tracy set new world records by successfully completing a 60-foot-tall Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare this weekend at the XGames Los Angeles. The LA cityscape changed a bit this weekend with a real-life replica of the famous bright orange bendy tracks that have lined the play rooms of every American boy since 1968. The double loop structure stood the height of a six-story building and was designed and constructed with the help of physicists who carefully calculated the optimum speed needed for Foust and Tanner’s cars to complete the look without losing to gravity and ending up in a top-down heap of metal at the bottom of the loop. The feat required a precisely timed 60mph acceleration and hit the drivers with 7Gs of force while in the loop. Of course, XGames organizers couldn’t have p...

Meet Team E3 Racing Winners Dee and Cody Erdmann

Meet Team E3 Racing Winners Dee and Cody Erdmann

Racer Cody Erdmann with Miss Slinger Super Speeday. For Dee Erdmann and son Cody, professional racing is a family affair. Dee entered Cody, 16, in the Team E3 Racing competition and when we read the young racer’s bio, we knew he was a natural. The Erdmann family of Mayville, Wisconsin loves racing and has spent years doing “anything involving going fast and turning left” before forming CHE Racing. Young Cody spent his formative years in the garage, watching his dad build racecars. It soon became apparent that the toddler was paying close attention when, at age two, he picked up a fallen lug nut and put it back on the car perfectly. As any gearhead knows, it’s easy to put a lug nut on wrong. That moment would prove a positive omen for Cody’s life. The boy who, at age four, saw Jeff Gordon race and declared, “I’m gonna be like him one day” is well on his way to a long and promising racing career. Cody’s competitiveness first showed up in his racing RC Oval Pan...

Hot Wheels Gets Real

Hot Wheels Gets Real

Hot Wheels hits real life with the Double Loop Dare at the 2012 X-Games Los Angeles June 30. Remember when you were a kid spending hours launching your little die-cast metal Hot Wheels cars down that loopy, winding bright orange plastic track and wishing it were all real? Well, for two guys with more nerve than we’ve got, that childhood fantasy is finally coming true this Saturday, June 30 at the X-Games Los Angeles. Towering over Downtown LA this weekend will be the Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare with 60-foot-tall loops – roughly the height of a six story building. And two X-Games champs will brave the force of 7 Gs, taking those loops at 60 miles per hour. Team Hot Wheels Yellow Driver Tanner Foust is a three-time X-Games Gold medalist and two-time Formula Drift champ who, incidentally, successfully landed Hot Wheels’ world record breaking distance jump at last year’s Indianapolis 500. Green Driver is Greg Tracy, a six-time Pikes Peak champion and one of the top stuntme...

That Fab Candy Apple Red Paint Job? Yeah – Birds Love it Too, New Study Shows

Know what's attracted to shiny red sports cars? Beautiful women. Oh, and bird poop, according to a new study. Bad news for your little red sports car. Turns out that gorgeous Candy Apple Red paint job makes your ride a big ol’ bird poop target. In a study commissioned by Halfords, an online retailer of bike and auto tech accessories, red cars attract more bird droppings than any other color. Researchers in the U.K. found that red vehicles made up a full 18 percent of the cars marked by birds. Blue cars were the next unluckiest at 14 percent. And being green may be easy after all. A mere one percent of green cars got hit – A statement from our feathered friends (or foes, if you drive red) on the eco-movement, perhaps? Here’s how the most popular car colors fared: Red – 18 percent Blue – 14 percent Black – 11 percent White – 7 percent Grey or Silver – 3 percent Green – 1 percent The study sample included 1,140 cars parked somewhere in England’s Br...

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Dusty Lawson

Meet Team E3 Racing Winner Dusty Lawson

Team E3 Racing winner Dusty Lawson and his father race sprint cars in the Northern Outlaw Sprint Association. Dusty Lawson probably first heard the rumble of a racing engine from the womb. “I have been around racing since I was born and went to my first race at seven months old,” says the third-generation racer and new Team E3 Racing winner from Minot, North Dakota. Lawson’s grandfather first fired up the family’s racing heritage in the 1950s and raced through the 1970s. His father followed suit, starting his racing career in 1980 and continuing today. Spending his childhood in the garage and at the tracks solidified Lawson’s choice to take up the family business when he came of age. He began helping in the pits at age 14 and by 17, had his own racecar. For seven years, he raced hobby stocks, winning multiple features and heat races and landing a finishing high of fourth in season points with a Ford engine. After hitting that seven-year-itch with hobby stocks, Laws...

Ferrari Restoring “King of Cool” Steve McQueen’s 275 GTB/4

Ferrari Restoring “King of Cool” Steve McQueen’s 275 GTB/4

Actor Steve McQueen's Ferrari 275 GTB/4 is being fully restored. He’s known as the King of Cool for multiple reasons – not the least of which is the massive collection of some of the world’s coolest cars he amassed before his death in 1980. Now, Steve McQueen is back in the headlines for one of those cars – a 275 GTB/4 that the actor bought in San Francisco while filming 1968′s Bullitt. Sometime during the 1980s, the car’s subsequent owner decided to give it bit of a makeover. He had the roof chopped off, transforming it in to faux-Spyder, presumably thinking he could trick the automotive world, or at least his none-the-wiser buddies, into believing he was the proud owner of one of just 10 authentic 275 GTB/4 NART Spyders existing. News of the chop job has auto enthusiasts around the world clutching their proverbial pearls. “The guy who had the top cut off of that thing needs to be hunted down and beaten,” declared one fan and social media poster. While we he...

Volkswagen Introduces Hover Car Concept

Volkswagen Introduces Hover Car Concept

Volkswagen's hover car would work via electromagnetic suspension. In a Marty-McFly-Goes-to-China moment, Volkswagen and China’s “The People’s Project” have debuted what might bring us closer than ever to that flying DeLorean we’ve all secretly pined for since the first installment of Back to the Future – that is, if it ever sees reality. The concept is vividly illustrated in a recently released video featuring a simulated cruise through Beijing in a wheel-shaped, two-seater pod floating several feet above the road’s surface. It’s operated by a center-mounted joystick. Dashboard information, including speed, mileage and engine cues are displayed hologram-style. So how does it work? The idea is based on electromagnetic suspension. Real-life implantation would require electromagnetic mineral strips embedded in the roads below it, creating the hovering effect. Rear-mounted thrusters would propel the car forward. Volkswagen’s hover car concept is the brainstorm ...

Summertime Swelter Means Your Car Suffers Too – E3 Spark Plugs Offers Tips for Keeping Cool

A few summertime car care tips can help make sure you're sunning on the beach rather than sweltering in your broke-down vehicle. As summer gets underway, extreme temperatures have probably already sent you sprinting into your air conditioned home or the deep end of your swimming pool. But just like you, your automobile can take only so much heat. Turns out that excessive heat can cause or worsen a whole slew of car maintenance issues. E3 Spark Plugs offers these tips to help your car and your wallet keep cool. Clean your battery and terminals, particularly if it’s an older one. Make sure that there is no acid leaking, that it has adequate water (heat can evaporate a battery’s internal fluids) and that the charge is strong but not off the charts. High summertime temperatures can speed up the chemical reaction inside your battery, causing it to overcharge. This can significantly shorten the battery’s lifespan. Check your coolant system and make sure all fluids are toppe...

Take a Trip to Concorso d’Eleganza – the World’s Most Exclusive Collector Car Show

This 1925 Rolls-Royce round door was discovered rusting in a New Jersey junkyard. Several owners and a massive overhaul later, it's considered among the world's elite collector cars. Pebble Beach may be the most famous among collector car shows. But it can’t touch the Concorso d’Eleganza in terms of exclusivity. Just 60 of the world’s rarest and most impressive antique cars were invited to this year’s event, held at the ritzy Villa d’Este hotel on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como. And while each of these cars would fetch a massive sum, a few are back-from-the-brink stories that rival any great barn find. Take the 1925 Rolls-Royce Round Door coupe for instance. Back in 1950-something, this mind-boggling beauty was rusting away in a New Jersey junkyard. A businessman who lured by the glimmer of a short-term buck slapped a coast of gold paint on it and charged passersby a dollar to see it. Fortunately, the car later ended up in the hands of renowned collector Bob Peter...

Shawn Lawless’ EV Rocket Makes History with 201mph Sprint

Shawn Lawless’ EV Rocket Makes History with 201mph Sprint

Shawn Lawless' Rocket is the first EV to breat 200mph in a quarter mile. It’s long been said that electric vehicles just can’t match the speed of gasoline-fueled rides. But longtime motorcycle racer and builder Shawn Lawless just put that notion to rest. Earlier this month, his Rocket EV bike hit 201 miles per hour in 6.94 seconds in an exhibition sprint at Virginia Motorsports Park. Originally built in 2010 with help from the famous Orange County Choppers in a two-episode television special, the Rocket made history as the first EV to break the quarter mile in less than seven seconds. The driver was Larry “Spiderman” McBride, a 30-year veteran in racing supercharged, nitro-burning motorcycles (His moniker comes by way of an announcer’s comment at the 1980 NHRA U.S. National about McBride’s style of crawling around on his motorcycle to keep it in the groove). The Rocket boasts a 150-pound, 1.2 k Wh battery and runs on a 13-inch DC motor with a custom Zilla controll...

He went on to win the 90cc 4 stroke class each of his first three racing seasons, also winning open mini two of those three years and finishing second in the other. In his fourth year on the track, Corson moved up to a Honda 300ex, running with the AMA’s D6 (American Motorcyclist Association District Six). He finished in the top three in both 300cc classes in the first year, then finished fourth running in the 450cc open C class each of his last two years on a 300.
