“Super Sports Car of the Future” Porsche 918 Spyder Hits Road

Porsche 918 Spyder prototype E3 Spark Plugs wants to know: Might you be interested in vintage-inspired super sports car capable of hitting 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and scoring 78 miles per gallon? Got $845,000 to drop? Well then, you’re in luck. Porsche recently hit the streets with the initial prototypes of the 918 Spyder, dubbed the “super sports car of the future.” The Spyder will definitely make your pulse race. Porsche press officials say its gas-electric drivetrain can indeed take you from zero to 60 in 3.1 seconds and tops out at a dizzying 199 miles per hour on gas, 94 mph on electricity. Those figures help bolster the claim that the new Spyder can log up around 78 miles per hour on the EU cycle. “What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance,” said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG. To that end, the Spyder 918 features three separate power sources: a 500 horsepower 4...

E3 Spark Plugs Congratulates the 2012 Houston Art Car Parade Winners

E3 Spark Plugs Congratulates the 2012 Houston Art Car Parade Winners

Shep - 2012 Houston Art Car Parade The annual weekend of wackiness that is the Houston Art Car Parade just wrapped its 25th anniversary. As always, the entries didn’t disappoint. E3 Spark Plugs congratulates all the winners of the world’s biggest art car event. Debuting in 1988, the Houston Art Car Parade originally featured 40 vehicles seen by an estimated 2,000 people. The relatively small event proved a big hit and by the next year, parade entries doubled and crowds swelled to tens of thousands. In 1989, the event got a major public relations boost from art car maker Harrod Blank, who eventually would write two books and produce two films on art cars. Soon, caravans of art cars were traveling from clear across the country, thousands of miles just to appear in the parade. That momentum has continued over the years. The three-day 2012 event featured more than 250 vehicles and other entries, including unicycles, lawnmowers and go-carts. Participants hail from throughout t...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Dan Bunting

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Dan Bunting

Team E3 Racing Tier 1 winner Dan Bunting has finished in the top 10 of the APR series each of the past four years. Dan Bunting’s competitive boat racing debut was not exactly all he had hoped for. In his very first race, the UIM World Championships in Marietta, Ohio, he barrel-rolled his boat on the eight qualifying lap. The experience might have been enough to send someone of lesser resolve paddling back to shore for a new landlubber’s hobby. But as a career police officer, Bunting had what it took to tough it out and try again. That’s why he’s a new member of Team E3 Racing. Bunting quickly got his pride and his boat back into shape and headed back into the water in time for the next race. Long story short, he ended his rookie season in 10th place on the America Powerboat Racing (APR) SuperLeague Circuit and not only landed a Rookie of the Year title, but helped his team score the prestigious Betty May Best Dressed Team Award to boot. Today, he’s a team owner and F...

E3 Spark Plugs Mourns the Loss of Carroll Shelby

E3 Spark Plugs Mourns the Loss of Carroll Shelby

Carroll Shelby, iconic car builder and racecar driver passed away May 10 at a Dallas hospital. E3 Spark Plugs, along with the rest of the automotive world, is mourning the loss of Carroll Shelby, iconic car builder and champion auto racer. Representatives with his company, Carroll Shelby International, say the 89-year-old passed away last Thursday, May 10 at a Dallas hospital. Best known for building the much celebrated Shelby Cobra sports car, Shelby began his professional life as a chicken farmer. When his ranching stint failed, Shelby went on to careers in champion race car driving, racing team ownership, automobile manufacturing, automotive consulting, operating African safari tours, developing a line of chilis and philanthropy. Shelby first came to international fame in 1959, when he and teammate Ray Salvadori won France’s grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans sports car race despite heart valve leakage problems he had suffered since age seven.  It’s said that he won the rac...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Andrew “Bubba” Pollard

Team E3 Racing's Andrew "Bubba" Pollard. Regarded as one of the most successful short tack racers this decade, Andrew “Bubba” Pollard recently was named to Team E3 Racing. A third-generation racer, Pollard literally grew up trackside. His grandfather, Sonny Pollard, built and managed Senoia Speedway, a 3/8-mile dirt oval track today is known as the fastest 3/8 asphalt oval in Georgia. That’s where he, his son and grandson spent their waking hours. Bubba Pollard’s first racing wins came via local bicycle races he won as a child, piloting a two-wheeled racing bike he built himself. As the year passed, he firmly established himself as a top Legends Cars and Late Models competitor. Between 1999 and 2001, he landed more than 50 Legend Car wins at Senoia Speedway, Watermelon Capital Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Atlanta Motor Speedway. In 2002, he got behind the wheel of a Pro Late Model and took it to victory lane six times, claiming the Senoia Speedway’s champio...

Kid KJ Appears on ABC’s 20/20 Episode Highlighting “Xtreme Parents”

Kid KJ, who made history when he became the youngest professional Monster Truck driver, appeared on ABC's 20/20 Friday. Did you see Friday night’s episode of ABC’s 20/20? We here at E3 Spark Plugs tuned in to see Kaid Jaret Olson-Weston, a.k.a. “Kid KJ” featured on the show’s “Xtreme Parents” episode. The pint-sized phenom from Ft. Lauderdale became the first professional youth mini-monster truck driver two years ago at the tender age of six. Now a seasoned 8-year-old, Kid KJ has a huge following and his own team. The Lil Mighty Monsters team is made up of Kid KJ, who drives Monster Bear; his 6-year old brother Jake Olson-Weston, driver of Sir Crush-A-Lot; and friends, 9-year-old Morgan Matheny and 14-year-old Cassie Berry, who split time behind the wheel of Demolition Diva. “The way I explain it is it’s the craziest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on but you’re the driver,” Kid KJ tells interviewers about being in the driver’s seat of an 11-foot-tall...

E3 Spark Plugs Loves Prada’s Classic Car-Inspired Spring 2012 Shoe Collection

E3 Spark Plugs Loves Prada’s Classic Car-Inspired Spring 2012 Shoe Collection

Here’s one for the car buffs and gearheads of the fairer sex. Prada’s Spring 2012 shoe collection is clearly inspired by classic cars of the 1950s. In fact, the company’s website has gone fully ’50s-tastic. But Prada isn’t the only footwear fashion house that found a muse in the garage. And E3 Spark Plugs is loving these revved-up runway looks. Prada’s line of women’s heels draw from the fun, futuristic feel of the 1950s and 1960s, when the space race was the craze and Hollywood had everyone believing that we’d all be driving bubble-shaped, airborne hover cars powered by atomic energy come the turn of the next millennium. Well, we’re not quite there yet and frankly, we still love the curves and points of those mid-century classic rides. Apparently, Prada does too. Selections in the high-end collection feature all the recognizable embellishments of the cars of that era, including fins, flames and pointed, rocket-esque taillights. Jane and Judy Jetson would have ...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 3 Winner Erik Gehrke

Team E3 Racing winner Erik Gehrke busts speeders on the roadways, but beats 'em all on the raceways. Call him the big man in the little car. Erik Gehrke is a three-time MiniCup Car Season champion and a new member of Team E3 Racing. Whether on the track or on the streets, Gehrke is a force to be reckoned with. By trade, he’s a police officer and hostage negotiator. But there’s no negotiating going on when he’s behind the wheel and on the race track. He’s out to win and he’s proven it by winning three back-to-back championships and dozens of feature races. Gehrke races a Chevy Impala Minicup car in the American Super Cup Series and also has raced Legends cars and mini sprint cars. But he’s most proud to be part of Lawmen Racing, a motorsports team founded by fellow police officers. Based in Antioch, Illinois, Lawmen Racing is made up almost entirely of current or retired police officers and their families, performing every racing-related task from driving the cars ...

E3 Spark Plugs Loves a Rusty Car

E3 Spark Plugs Loves a Rusty Car

Rust art by Bo Lundvang Considered the scourge of car buffs in the Salt Belt states, rust is getting a revamped rep, thanks to a Swedish artist. Bo Lundvang apparently has a knack for spotting the beauty in the otherwise offensive. After all, nothing makes a classic car collector cringe like a spot of rust on a vintage beauty. But for Lundvang and his followers, the dreaded tin worm is a welcome creative entity. Lundvang’s works of art feature smooth sheet metal renditions of some of the world’s favorite automobiles in backgrounds of rusted sheet metal. Pieces are created via a multi-step process that begins with a computerized rendering of the design. The finished image goes to a vinyl cutter that turns a large section of adhesive vinyl into a stencil. Lundvang affixes the stencil to a piece of bare steel, typically measuring three feet long by a foot and half tall. He then applies a proprietary process that speeds oxidation and regulates formation of rust. When the stenc...

E3 Spark Plugs Remembers Freddie Ford – Do you?

E3 Spark Plugs Remembers Freddie Ford – Do you?

Freddie Ford worked the auto show circuit, entertaining crowds throughout the late 1960s. Apparently, National Robotics Week happens each April. So, E3 Spark Plugs decided to celebrate with a shiny, smiley, chatty blast from the futuristic past. If you were a kid or a car buff back in the 1960s, you may remember Freddie Ford. Standing nine feet tall and weighing in at 800 pounds, the original Freddie Ford was a talking quasi-robot made from Ford auto parts and designed to entertain crowds on the auto show circuit. A vintage press release notes “a heart made of switches, tapes and relays, skin made of sheet metal and aluminum” and an animated ability to answer a limited series of questions, doling out automotive advice and lobbing a few shameless plugs for the newest Ford models. “Are those oil pans really your feet?” “Yes, sir, these are 390 V-8 oil pans from the biggest V-8 that uses only regular gas. And remember….oil changes are only needed every six months or...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Tammie Huenink

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Tammie Huenink

Competitive tractor puller Tammie Huenink dedicates her efforts in her White Lightning tractor to breast cancer awareness. After six years serving as secretary for the Outlaw Hot Rod Tractor Pulling Association, Tammie Huenink decided to get out from behind the desk and climb up behind the wheel instead. It proved to be a smart move. In her very first season pulling modified hot rod tractors, she finished the season fourth in the Colorado Truck and Tractor Pullers Association (CTTPA) and fifth in the Outlaws. She enters her next season as a Team E3 Racing Tier 2 winner. Her first pull was a bit nerve-wracking, says Huenink, who made her track debut in Mitchell, Nebraska driving her father-in-law’s tractor, dubbed Wild Fire. “I’m not sure who was more nervous him or me,” Huenink recalls. “I was wondering why in the world I had now decided to strap myself into this mechanical contraption on four wheels with 900 horsepower hooked to a sled to go, hopefully, 300 feet do...

Kyle LeDuc Sweeps Lucas Oil Off Road Season Opener, Co-Sponsored by E3 Spark Plugs

Kyle LeDuc (center) swept the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season opener this past weekend, with Adrian Cenni and brother Todd LeDuc taking second and third places. This past weekend marked the season opening of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at the Firebird International Speedway in Chandler, Arizona, sponsored in part by E3 Spark Plugs. When the dirt settled, it was Kyle Leduc who took the top podium position, opening the 2012 season in grand style. Driving for Team Associated, LeDuc came out of the gate throwing blows in Round 1 on Saturday, handily taking the checkered flag and nabbing the N-Fab Fastest Lap award. Adrian Cenni and brother Todd LeDuc took second and third place. LeDuc continued his merciless on-track rein the next day, snatching up the top qualifying spot and the second row starting spot once an inversion was pulled in Sunday’s Round 2. During the race, he again battled it out with Cenni, at one point eyeballing nothin’ but track dirt out his...

Another Flying Car May Hit Market Soon

Another Flying Car May Hit Market Soon

Which would you rather buy: The sleek PAL-V One or the practical Terrafugia Transition? Terrafugia’s Transition, the world’s first flying plane available to the consumer market, is headed to the New York Auto Show looking to cash in on the as-yet non-pilot market. And another, Holland’s PAL-V One, has logged its first successful flight and is searching for investors. The PAL-V One took its maiden flight in March and all went smoothly, reports show. It’s a two-seat three-wheeler that’s one part car, one part gyrocopter with a rotor and propeller that can be deployed for flying, then folded away for driving. It typically flies below 4,000 feet, the airspace available for uncontrolled Visual Flight Rules (VFR) traffic. That means pilots/drivers can operate the PAL-V One with no interference from commercial air traffic and won’t be required to submit a flight plan. Speed tops out at just over 110 miles per hour on land and in the air, and it can fly for up to 315 miles...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Alex Prunty

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 2 Winner Alex Prunty

At age 16, Alex Prunty started his own professional racing team. Nineteen-year-old Lomira, Washington resident Alex Prunty is a third-generation rice car driver revving up for his fourth competitive season behind the wheel – now as a member of Team E3 Racing. Of course, racing is in his blood. He’s the seventh member of his family to hop into the drivers’ seat since Grandfather Doug Prunty ran his one and only season in 1961. Grandpa Doug’s career might have been a short one, but it spawned a dynasty, as all five sons, Daniel, Dusty, David, Dennis and Dale eventually began racing careers of their own. Now, grandson Alex is burning up the tracks and making a name for himself with his own racing team, Alex Prunty Racing. It didn’t take long. Prunty raced his first season in 2009 in a donated 1990 Nissan Stanza XE that had been turned into a racecar. Despite a host of engine and electrical issues, Alex and his father, Dan, got the car in running condition and Alex drove...

Florida Woman’s 1964 Mercury Hits 576,000 Miles – That’s a Lot of Spark Plugs!

Rachel Veitch in her beloved "chariot," a 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente that just hit 576,000 miles. Copyright Rachel Veitch. They say the average lifespan of a daily-used car tops out at about 150,000 miles but can hit upwards of 200,000 if its owner really minds the maintenance. Judging by those figures, we here at E3 Spark Plugs think 93-year-old Rachel Veitch, whose 1964 Mercury recently hit 576,000 miles, just might be the best car owner ever. The last time Veitch bought a car, gas cost 39 cents a gallon, Lyndon B. Johnson was POTUS, My Fair Lady swept the Oscars and The Little Old Lady from Pasadena was tearing up the airwaves. It was 1964 when she fell for a cream colored Mercury Comet Caliente that she quickly dubbed her “chariot.” Apparently, Veitch was nothing like that little old lady: And everybody’s saying that there’s nobody meaner Than the little old lady from Pasadena She drives real fast and she drives real hard She’s the terror of Colorado Boulevar...

Meet Team E3 Racing Tier 1 Winner Stephen Kildahl

Team E3 Racing winner Stephen Kildahl is the youngest competitor on the Super Boat International Offshore Boat Racing Circuit. Estero, Florida’s Stephen Kildahl is, quite literally, an exception to the rule. That’s why he’s one of the inaugural class of Team E3 Racing Tier 1 winners. Kildahl has been racing speedboats since age 16, when he received a special dispensation to compete on the Super Boat International Offshore Boat Racing Circuit. The rule book said competitors must be at least 18 years old, but Kildahl’s talent and skill were clearly beyond his years. And he’s since proven that the move was a good one. In just four years, Kildahl has racked up 14 career wins, one world championship, two national championships and three Florida championships. And at age 20, he remains the youngest full time driver on the circuit by at least 10 years, regularly going deck-to-deck with racers boasting many more years of experience on the water. That’s quite an accomplish...
