Worst Excuses Actually Used to Dodge Speeding Tickets

Worst Excuses Actually Used to Dodge Speeding Tickets

Let's face it - A lot of us have a need for speed, but nobody likes getting nabbed with a speeding ticket. So, we can come up with some real doozies of excuses to dodge a high-dollar citation. PoliceOne.com, an online resource for law enforcement professionals, asked officers nationwide to tell about the best, worst and craziest lines they've received from lead-footed drivers. Here are 10 of our favorites here at E3 Spark Plugs. "I wasn't speeding, I just got a haircut and it makes me look fast." "I'm a Wicka. You know, a witch. Are you giving me a ticket? I'll put a spell on you." "Oh, I thought the sign I 95 meant the speed limit. Glad you didn't catch me over on SR 210 earlier." "Duh, I know I was going fast, I was trying to get the snow off my windshield so I could see where I'm going." "My car has a recall on it for unexplained acceleration and I'm on my way to get it fixed." "I have a cold and when I cough, my foot mashes the pedal." "The box says 'If you have an e...

Here's How NOT to Dodge Speeding Ticket

Here's How NOT to Dodge Speeding Ticket

File this one in the "dumbest criminals" folder, E3 Spark Plugs fans. Florida man Julius Lupowitz recently got nabbed for his lead food in West Melbourne. But what he did to dodge the $200 speeding ticket coming his way only ended up getting him in far worse legal trouble. When the officer writing Lupowitz's ticket turned around, the delusional driver got the not-so-bright idea to dial 911 with a bogus claim. "There's definitely someone going to get shot," he reportedly told 911 operators. "Please, please. Wingate and Hollywood. Please. There's a man with a gun. I see him looking at me but I don't think he sees I'm on a cell phone. I swear I'm so scared I might get killed myself. Please."Apparently, Lupowitz mistakenly thought that the officer would have no choice but to speed off to an arguably more serious scene. Guess he didn't realize the city is protected by a whole department rather than a single cop. It didn't take long for the officer's cohorts to realize they were chasin...

Diesel Scandal Prompts Massive Volkswagen Recall - Is Your Ride Affected?

Diesel Scandal Prompts Massive Volkswagen Recall - Is Your Ride Affected?

All the talk in the automotive world lately is the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal. The company recently admitted it falsified output of carbon emissions from diesel cars by programming engine management software in some diesel models to turn on emission controls only during testing. Once affected vehicles passed testing and returned to the roadways, they would rup up to 40 times more emissions than revealed at the test site, according to officials with the US Environmental Protection Agency. That's one dirty move. In the aftermath of the confession, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn stepped down and the company issued a recall of some 11 million vehicles in the US alone, with upward of $7.2 billion set aside to cover related costs. Affected models are: Jetta (Manufacturing year 2009 – 2015) Jetta Sportwagen (MY 2009-2014) Beetle (MY 2012 – 2015) Beetle Convertible (MY 2012-2015) Audi A3 (MY 2010 – 2015) Golf (MY 2010 – 2015) Golf Sportwagen (MY 2015) Passat...

Janis Joplin's Psychedelic Porsche Hits the Auction Block

Janis Joplin's Psychedelic Porsche Hits the Auction Block

We here at E3 Spark Plugs belive this just might be the grooviest automotive auction ever. A customized 1965 Porsche 365C 1600 Cabriolet that once belonged to iconic singer and songwriter Janis Joplin is up for sale at RM Sotheby’s in New York in December. Originally oyster white before its crazy colorful paint job, the ride is expected to fetch upward of £260,000  - that's $396,350 in US dollars. Joplin purchased the car used in 1968 for a mere $3,500 and comissioned roadie Dave Roberts to give it a psychedelic revamp. The paint job dubbed "The History of the Universe" took a month to complete and quickly became one of the most recognizable sights in the San Francisco area where Joplin lived. That paint job also proved a bit of an insurance policy. When the car was jacked in 1969, it quickly dawned on the theif that it would be easy to spot cruising the Golden City. So, he pulled a dumb-criminal move and spray painted it gray. Fortunately for Joplin fans and, ultimately, cla...

With this month's release of the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the top 10 most stolen rides in 2014, there's a lot of talk about just how to avoid becoming a car theft victim statistic. One idea: If you live in California, Washington or Texas, consider a move. NICB statistics show that cities in these three states fill the list of the top 10 metropolitan areas with the highest auto theft rates last year. San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, California Bakersfield, California Stockton-Lodi, California Odessa, Texas Modesto, California Spokane-Spokane Valley, Washington Vallejo-Fairfield, California Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Washington Fresno, California San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California What gives? Hot Wheels: Honda Accord, Civic Named Most Stolen Rides of 2014

Hot Wheels: Honda Accord, Civic Named Most Stolen Rides of 2014

Drive a Honda? You might want to look into a few theft-deterrent options. That's because the Honda Accord and Honda Civic took the top two spots on the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most stolent rides in 2014. The nearest contenders weren't even close. The news comes as no surprise to insurance pros and law enforcement. The same two cars topped the annual list last year as well. Experts point to the fact that both models are known for reliability, which means many older models remain on the roadways - and those older rides lack modern security features that come standard in more recently manufactured vehicles. Plus, their enduring popularity makes them less noticeable when the BOLOs go out. Here's the NICB's list of the 10 models most likely to disappear from America's driveways: Honda Accord - 51,290 total thefts Honda Civic - 43,936 total thefts Ford pickup, full size - 28,680 total thefts Chevrolet pickup, full size - 23,196 total thefts Toyota Camry - 1...

Eight Great Tips to Avoid Having your Ride Swiped

Eight Great Tips to Avoid Having your Ride Swiped

Statistics from the FBI show that upward of 700,000 vehicles are lifted each year, with metropolitan areas in California, Washington and Texas having the highest auto theft rates. And if you own a Honda Accord or Civic, you're at particular risk. These popular rides known for their reliabilty top the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most stolen vehicles in 2014.To avoid contributing to such statistics, E3 Spark Plugs offers these eight great tips for avoiding having your ride disappear from the parking lot or driveway: Drive a manual: An ever growing percentage of Americans don't know how or simply don't want to drive a manual. And if they can't drive it, they can't steal it. Take your steering wheel with you: Quick release steering wheel kits are increasingly popular options for deterring theft. Lock your doors: This one should be a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised at just how many car owners fail to lock up, particularly in areas they deem as safe, like quit...

US Roadways Most Frequented by Drunk Drivers

US Roadways Most Frequented by Drunk Drivers

Statistics show that drunk driving kills one person every 52 mintues throughout the United States. You might think that these accidents are more frequent in larger party cities like Los Angeles, New York or Miami. But you'd be wrong. Turns out that drunk driving crashes are far more likely to happen along the long stretches of open road that connect small towns in rural western areas, where drivers often are tempted to drive faster and less carefully for longer distances. A new study commissioned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminsistration took a look at road fatalities stats associated with drunk driving all across the country. The data turned up a total of 94,550 drunk driving deaths between 2004 and 2013, and identified the roadways where these accidents happened most. The top 25 are: 1-90 in Montana I-25 in Wyoming I-80 in Wyoming I-25 in New Mexico I-40 in New Mexico 1-90 in South Dakota I-29 in South Dakota I-90 in Wyoming I-10 in Louisiana I- 295 in ...

New Design Could Revolutionize Motorcycle Helmets

New Design Could Revolutionize Motorcycle Helmets

In 2013 pro motocross racer Zack Bell experienced one of the most harrowing crashes the industry and its fans would see all year. It happened at the Dallas Supercross event where Bell was making his 250SX debut. He was leading his heat race and launching off a triple when it all went wrong and he found himself soaring through the air sans-bike, then landing hard on the dirt-covered concrete track. Those in the stands were sure Bell's career and possibly his life were over. So, you can imagine the shock when he got up and walked away.In most any other case, Bell likely would have suffered a major head injury. But on that day, he just happened to be wearing a 6D Advanced Imact Defense helmet designed by someone who knows all too well the daily dangers that competitive bike racers face. Former pro dirt bike rider and industry executive Bob Weber had come to believe that the most popular motorcycle helmets simply weren't doing their job -and for a reason that may seem counterintuitiv...

E3 Spark Plugs Recommends: "Havana Motor Club" Documentary

E3 Spark Plugs Recommends:

With Old Glory again flying over the American Embassy building for the first time in over half a century, there's renewed interest in all things Cuba. And for vintage car enthusiasts, that means the eventual possibility of a firsthand look at the one thing the Pearl of the Antilles is best known or - Classic American rides. Meanwhile, for speed-loving children of the Revolution, those storied American-made machines are much more than simple modes of transportation. They represent freedom, thrill and the competitive spirit, as beautifully illustrated in the new documentary, Havana Motor Club. Says the film's website: "Punctuated by a lively Cuban soundtrack, Havana Motor Club captures a nation at a crossroads. Changing international relationships and economic reforms have offered unprecedented opportunity to Cubans, but left the children of the Revolution unsure of the best route forward. For the half-dozen racers at the heart of Perlmutt's film, this means last-minute adjustment...

Shelby American Rolls Out Limited-Edition 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe

If you're a vintage car buff, no doubt you've pined for the ever-elusive chance to drive or even own a classic Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, perhaps the most iconic of American sports coupes. We here at E3 Spark Plugs certainly have. Well, now's our chance - sort of. Shelby American recently debuted the two versions of its 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe at the Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival. The exclusive event, held at Monterey Airport's Jet Center, is the official kickoff of the annual Monterey Car Week and features the crème de la crème of automotive and aircraft. The original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes were built specifically to take on Ferrari and its 250 GTO in the GT class on the track. Their shape was developed by Shelby's Pete Brock for a more aerodynamic aesthetic, which proved critical to competitiveness over the extended straightaways that were more common to continental circuits back in the day. Just six were built between 1964 and 1965 before fam...

Consumer Reports Releases its Annual Automotive Report Cards

Consumer Reports Releases its Annual Automotive Report Cards

Which car brand is America's best? Consumer Reports recently rolled out its Annual Automotive Report Cards, listing its top picks based on a 78-point overall score that combines road-test and predicted reliability scores. One surprise this year is Detroit-based Buick, which makes a strong showing in a list that typically is dominated by Japanese brands. In fact, Buick this year has the highest percentage of tested models being Consumer Reports-recommended at 83 percent. Subaru follows closely with 80 percent and by Lexus and Kia, both at 78 percent. "For years, domestic automakers built lower-priced and lower-quality alternatives to imports, but those days are behind us," Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports director of automotive testing, told reporters. "Today, many domestic models can go toe to toe with the best imports." Consumer Reports' top picks for the best automotive brands of 2015 (with a highest possible score of 78) are: Lexus - 78 Mazda - 75 Toyota - 74 Audi - 73 S...

Miami vice Ferrari Testarossa Set for Sale at Monterey

Miami vice Ferrari Testarossa Set for Sale at Monterey

If you were a child of the MTV generation, no doubt you popped the collar on your pastel colored blazer, rocked a mullet and dreamed of cruising down the street and picking up girls in your Ferrari Testarossa - just like the guys on Miami Vice. Now, if you've got the cash, that dream can become a reality come this weekend's Mecum auction at Monterey Car Week on California's coast. In the hit show, Det. James "Sonny" Crockett (played by Don Johnson) and his partner Det. Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) were undercover narcotics investigators posing as high-level drug dealers in sexy, violent, cocaine-soaked Miami, Florida. After the dramatic and untimely destruction of his Daytona Spyder, and a fair amount of complaining to boss, Lieutenant Martin Castillo (Edward James Olmos), Crockett's character landed the famed Testarossa in an effort to keep up his appearance as a monies crook. The car proved an immediate hit among fans and a stroke of marketing genius for both the show...

Automotive Marketing Pro's Off-Roading Trip Leads to Cool New Standard for Tacoma Trucks

Automotive Marketing Pro's Off-Roading Trip Leads to Cool New Standard for Tacoma Trucks

The 2016 line of Toyota Tacoma model versions will have a cool new standard feature, thanks to a Toyota marketing pro's inspired travels to several serious off-roading hotspots including Moab, Utah. Throughout the trip, the guy noticed dozens of GoPro cameras mounted to various spots on many of the trucks, Jeeps, bikes and other off-road rides - some sporting as many as four mounts and cameras. These increasingly popular cameras with amazing stability control are used to record off-roading adventures and post them on YouTube and other social media sites. That's when inspiration hit. A suggestion to the company's higher-ups and a phone call to GoPro launched a series of custom design meetings as well as visibility, durability and crash survivability tests to assure that the new mount would withstand extreme heat and humidity, plus heavy vibrations that off-roading can subject a vehicle to. Finally the work produced a solid interior windshield mount that will be available as a sta...

Elderly Drivers Rock the Roadways - But Should They?

Elderly Drivers Rock the Roadways - But Should They?

In our last blog, E3 Spark Plugs brought you the story of Queen Elizabeth's wild ride to church one otherwise peaceful Sunday morning. Commandeering her sleek Jaguar X-type, as she's known to do now and then, Lighting Liz got a bit antsy with a young family blocking her path at Windsor Great Park and handled the matter by veering into the grass, busting a polite-but-pointed royal wave and going on her way, presumably with David Bowie's "Modern Love" blaring from radio. OK, so we dreamed up that last part, but if the song fits… Church on time terrifies meChurch on time makes me partyChurch on time puts my trust in God and man The episode was met with a range of reactions from mild amusement to mad props. But it also raised the question as to just how safe it is for elderly drivers to command the roadways. Here in the US, there were some 36 million licensed drivers age 65 or older in 2012 - a 34-pecent boost from 1999. That same year, 5,560 older adults were killed and more th...

Queen Elizabeth Busts a Move Behind the Wheel

Queen Elizabeth Busts a Move Behind the Wheel

As E3 Spark Plugs reported a few months back when she took Formula One champ Lewis Hamilton to task for his lack of proper lunch table manners, England's Queen Elizabeth is a bit of a badass - Legit. She proved it all over again recently when she told her chauffer to park his non-royal rump in the passenger's seat and took command of the steering wheel herself on a Sunday morning jaunt to church. Oh, but the world was in for another surprise. Royal watchers with ready cameras snapped a series of pics of the soon-to-be nonagenarian Queen as she went all hell-on-wheels in her sleek Jaguar X-type, scaring the daylights out of a young couple walking with their two young children in Windsor Great Park. Apparently, they were blocking her path and she simply was not having it. Rather than wait for them to safely cross the road, Lightning Liz instead veered into the grass, shot a friendly royal wave to the shocked family and went on her way. While it may seem out of character for a wo...

Six Retro-Tastic Automotive Features Car Buyers Still Want

Six Retro-Tastic Automotive Features Car Buyers Still Want

Classic cars are classic for a reason - and not just for their age. They're also classic for favored features that have long since disappeared from auto manufacturing, and a few of those features still are being requested by new car buyers. Here are a few noted by Swaplease.com, and a few we here at E3 Spark Plugs added to the list ourselves: Cassette players: As early as the 1950s, car owners wanted more variety in their traveling music choices than the radio dial offered. Enter Chrysler's Highway Hi-Fi, which played 7-inch discs in 16 2/3 rpm format exclusively from Columbia Records. But even that proved too limiting for consumers, particularly considering the $200 cost (over $1,700 in today's dollars). Since, we've seen multiple technologies come and go, including the 8-track, cassette, CD, MP3 and MP4, Bluetooth and digital radio. But apparently, it's the trusty cassette player - the one that heralded the introduction of one of mankind's best inventions, the mixtape - that...

DIY Car Washing - Six Reasons You're Doing it WRONG

DIY Car Washing - Six Reasons You're Doing it WRONG

If your ride is covered with enough mud, dust and pollen to render it unrecognizable, it's time to sling some suds. But if you're like most American car owners, there's a little something you should know. Chances are if you're going the DIY route to get your car looking like the showroom sparkler it was when you bought it, you're doing it wrong. E3 Spark Plugs offers a few common car washing missteps and tips to fix them: You're washing your car with the same stuff that cleans your dishes. WRONG! Dishwashing detergent is simply too harsh and can damage your ride's paint job. Use a cleaner formulated specifically for washing vehicles instead. You use a plain ol' sponge or washcloth to wash and dry your car. WRONG! Sponges won't sufficiently grip dirt and grime, and both sponges and plain washcloths can scratch your paint job. Opt for microfiber washcloths and microfiber towels instead. They're less harsh but get the job done. You use one bucket. WRONG! Fill one bucket with...
