Flying cars have been the stuff of sci-fi movies for decades. Now, they're closer to reality than ever, according to news coming out of South by Southwest (SXSW). We here at E3 Spark Plugs are psyched.
Interviewed by CBC News at the annual Austin, TX conference on music, film and all things interactive, AeroMobil CEO Juraj Vaculik said he aims to have a working model for clients in just two years. And though you'll have to be uber-rich to own one and a licensed pilot to fly one, you ultimately may be able to enjoy one, if all goes as planned.
"We believe that 2017, we'll be able to launch this to market," Vaculik, AeroMobil’s co-founder, said of the flying roadster at his Sunday SXSW presentation, adding that his company's long-term vision for their winged two-seater may involve ride-sharing services and taxis. "If something like a flying Uber and flying Lyft will be on the market… many users will find this a very efficient way to move.”
Yes - sometime during the next decade, you may one day head to school, work or the mall Jetsons-style.
The model showcased at SXSW is the company's third model is a limited edition vehicle that will be capable of logging some 400 miles at a 2-mile altitude on a tank of regular fuel - the same stuff you pump into your car. A few specs, including a fully autonomous flying capability, and pricing are still being worked out. Meanwhile, it's expected that AeroMobil's flying car and others in development ultimately will significantly impact our daily lives a la The Fifth Element. Word has it that federal safety officials, engineers and legislators already are discussing how traffic regulations may develop over the coming decades as the concept of flying cars heads toward mainstream acceptance.
