E3 Spark Plugs Celebrates 78 Years of the Drive-In Theater

E3 Spark Plugs celebrates the 78th anniversary of the drive-in theater. This week marks the 78th anniversary of a cinematic wonder that remains an all-time favorite for us here at E3 Spark Plugs. On June 6th 1933, the first drive in movie theater opened in Camden, New Jersey, billing itself as a kid-friendly flicker venue. “The whole family is welcome, regardless of how noisy the children are,” read the slogan for the experimental venue created by Richard Hollingshead, a young sales manager at his dad’s Whiz Auto Products. Hollingshead was sure that he could find a way to combine his two loves – cars and moving pictures – into a profitable venture. So, he set about perfecting his idea for an open-air movie theater where patrons could enjoy films from the...

Dungey Breaks; Reed Wins Again

Shift Racing's Chad Reed captured his second win in as many races for Two-Two Motorsports at the Freestone MX AMA National over the Memorial Day weekend. Photo courtesy of Shift Racing. The only thing hotter than the air in Texas this Memorial Day weekend was the on-track action at the Freestone MX track outside Wortham, TX. Last week’s 450 cc class winner at Hangtown, Chad Reed, wasted little time claiming the win in Moto 1 after passing the Lucas Oil TLD Honda of Christian Craig on lap eight. Reed’s main rival, Rockstar Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, chased the Two-Two Motorsport’s rider to the line for second place followed by Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto in third for yet another “red-yellow-green” finish. In Moto 2, Dungey charged to an early lead...

Rattray Wins Freestone MX National

South African Tyla Rattray finished 2-1 in Texas to claim the overall win at Freestone MX National for Round 2 of the Lucas Oil AMA MX National Championship. Photo courtesy of Pro Circuit Racing. It was “Africa Hot” in Texas according to Tyla Rattray the 250 cc overall winner of the Lucas Oil AMA MX National at the Freestone MX track. And hot it was. In the opening Moto, Rattray’s teammate Dean Wilson quickly proved to the Texas crowd that last year’s performance was no fluke. Wilson inherited the lead after Justin Barcia’s Honda flipped directly into the path of Red Bull KTM rider Marvin Musquin. The Frenchman staggered off the track after being struck in the head by Barcia’s rear wheel. The incident not only ended Musquin’s day but a badly...

E3 Spark Plugs and Robby Gordon Salute our Military

"Robby Gordon Army Challenge" was released on DVD in April. E3 Spark Plugs supports America’s troops. So, when we heard that “Robby Gordon Army Challenge” was recently released on DVD, we had to get our copy. And we think you will too. First aired on the Military Channel, “Robby Gordon Army Challenge” features NASCAR and off-road champion Gordon’s visit with the troops at Fort Irwin military base, a premiere training center for military members. While Gordon certainly has an impressive list of accomplishments over his racing career, he admits he’s got nuthin’ on our troops. Getting a firsthand glimpse of the real-life conditions that U.S. troops encounter on the front lines every day proved to be a real eye  opener for Gordon, and...

Victory for Mardis, Heartbreak for Hamm at E3 Spark Plugs Co-Sponsored Lucas Oil Modifieds This Weekend

Jim Mardis, winner of this weekend's Geico 75 of the Lucas Oil Modified racing series. Doug Hamm was sure he had this weekend’s Lucas Oil Modified Geico 75 race co-sponsored by E3 Spark Plugs in the bag. After all, he dominated the track at the Las Vegas Bullring for much of the first 70 laps before the race was red-flagged so drivers could conserve fuel after a crash. But when the race restarted, Hamm’s car wouldn’t. Who knows if that passage in Ecclesiastes crossed Hamm’s mind as he sat in the pits watching his competitors fight it out for the remaining five laps: “The race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong… but time and chance happeneth to them all.” For Hamm, time and chance delivered a sucker punch in the form of...
