Another 1967 Corvette L88 Breaks Auction Record with $3.85 Million Sale

This rare red-on-red 1967 Chevy Corvette L88 just broke auction sales records fetching a cool $3.85 million.

The past few months have been very good ones for the blessed few owners of rare 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88s. In September, a buyer at a Mecum auction drove home a ’67 L88 for a record-breaking $3.2 million. That price tag pummeled the prior record of a now seemingly paltry $1.6 million for a Corvette at auction, set by Barrett-Jackson in 2008 with the Pininfarina-built, one-off “Rondine” coupe.

But that $3.2 million record proved to be a short lived one. This past weekend, another ’67 L88 ‘Vette was on the auction block with Barrett-Jackson’s Arizona event. This time, the hammer fell at a new record – a head-spinning $3.85 million.

She’s a rare beauty, alright. The Candy Apple Red head-turner is one of just 20 racetrack-worthy rides that were produced and sold that year. Consider that it’s the only known car with the unique red on red color combination and it’s clear that this is an extraordinarily elite machine.

Oh, but there’s more. Documentation shows that this is the only 1967 L88 to have attained an NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) 98.2 Regional Top Flight 2001 award, 98.4 National Top Flight 2001 award, a Regional Performance Verification Award and the ultimate award for Corvette restoration or preservation – the NCRS Duntov Mark of Excellence Award 2001. Equipped just as the documentation indicates, this L88 is the best of the best.

Altogether, Barrett-Jackson sellers racked up $248.6 million worth of collectible cars – a record in itself. Other recent auction notables include a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder, sold by RM Auctions for $8.8 million; and a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS that had been stored in a garage for 44 years after an engine bay fire before being sold for $2 million by Gooding & Co.
