Honda Wins AMA Supercross at 77th Daytona Bike Week

Privateer rider Justin Brayton saw his tenacity pay off big Saturday night at the opening event for the 77th Annual Daytona Bike Week. A veteran motocrosser, Brayton posted his first career AMA Monster Energy Supercross win. The 33-year old won his heat race to qualify directly into the main event on America's biggest stages. When the gate dropped, Brayton only needed to pass Honda-factory rider Christian Craig to put his Smartop/MotoConcepts Honda CRF 450 out front. Racing from the lead early on, the veteran was passed once on Lap 4 by Marvin Musquin. But, the factory KTM rider made a mistake on the next lap relinquishing the lead.

Two-time defending Daytona Supercross champion Eli Tomac had troubles after the start but quickly worked his way through the pack from 22nd to finish in 2nd place about 4 1/2 seconds behind Brayton. Series points leader Jason Anderson went down twice on his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna and eventually worked his way into seventh. Anderson maintained his points lead despite his worst result of 2018. After a mediocre start, Yamaha's Cooper Webb worked his way past Christian Craig into second but was passed late in the race by a hard-charging Tomac. Webb would finish on the podium in third place.

Justin Brayton, a two-time Australian Supercross title holder, became the oldest winner of an AMA Monster Energy Supercross event with his win at Daytona International Speedway. In the 250cc class for East-Coast riders, KTM rider Jordan Smith pulled a holeshot and held off 2016 Daytona Supercross winner Jeremy Martin for the win. It was the first win in 2018 for Smith and the third of his career. Points leader Zach Osborne won his heat race but struggled to get going in the main event. The Husqvarna rider finished fourth behind new points leader Kawasaki's Austin Forkner.
