It's a little bit Tron, a tad Batmobile and touch of Alien xenomorph. And that's just the exterior of Chevy' insane new FNR concept car brought to you courtesy of the recent Shanghai Auto Show. It's the stuff of science fiction brought to life and while it's likely far too costly to ever make the production line, we here at E3 Spark Plugs would love to get behind the wheel just once.
The car features a sci-fi-inspired capsule design with dragonfly doors that swing up from both the front and back, magnetic hubless wheels, an automatic wireless charging system and a roof-mounted sensor package that can be used to map out the car's route - human interaction not necessary.
Inside, you'll find seating that looks more like intergalactic space harps than standard bucket seats. They rotate 180 degrees, turning the car into something of a social scene - a highly effective use of space, considering that no one need pay attention to the road. The fully automated FNR does that for you, after all.
Of course, even far into the future, we expect some vehicle owners will boast a bit of nostalgia when it comes to driving. For them, the FNR's full-width dashboard and control panel will allow for piloting via gestures much like those used to operate today's tablets or smart phones, old-school steering wheels be damned. Another familiar item going the way of the 8-track cassette player is the conventional key. The FNR boasts an iris-reading scanner for easy identification and ignition.
"The Chevrolet-FNR is loaded with a range of intelligent technologies usually seen only in science fiction movies," Chevy officials said via a media release, noting that their aim is "to create a unique, intelligent vehicle for tomorrow's younger consumers."
