National Hot Rod Association has announced an ambitious 22-race schedule for the 2021 world championship of drag racing. Beginning its 70th season as the sport’s premier sanctioning body, NHRA welcomes a new sponsor in Camping World and will bring back the Countdown to the Championship format for the upcoming year. For the first time in drag racing history, the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series will kick off the new season at the 52nd annual Gatornationals on March 12-14 at Gainesville Raceway in Florida. As COVID-19 restrictions are lifted during the 2021 racing season, fans will experience special treats and features as the NHRA tour celebrates its seven decades of success.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic took a heavy toll on the 2020 NHRA season, the series was able to contest eleven of the scheduled twenty-four events at eight different venues during the coronavirus lockdown.
After a one-year hiatus, the NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoff will return in 2021. Drivers in the NHRA Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle divisions will compete for points during the first sixteen (note: Arizona Nationals has been cancelled). NHRA pro teams whose driver finishes in the Top-10 positions of each NHRA pro category will compete for a championship over the final six events. The 2021 season finale will be held at the 56th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals slated for November 12-14 at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
